Fringe Sports Friday!

by:Matthew Hays02/11/11
normal_fringe_1-2 Fret not, Cat fans, I have that which you crave. It's time for the first ever Will Lentz-less Fringe Sports Fridays. In his absence, I will be filling you in on all the student athletes who often live outside the gaze of KSR's vigilant eyes. - UK Hoops have hit a bit of a rough patch after rattling off seven straight wins. On Monday they lost a hard-fought contest to Tennessee and their towering front line. They followed that loss with a 66-61 faltering against South Carolina in Columbia. This is only a minor setback for Matthew Mitchell and his squad, though. They look to get back on track this Sunday against LSU in Memorial Coliseum. Like the Tennessee game, it will be broadcast on ESPN2, but if you're in Lexington at 2:30 you should definitely head over to check it out in person. The girls are fun to watch. - Baseball season is right around the corner and UK got some good preseason press when it was announced that junior right-handed pitcher, Alex Meyer, was named preseason All-Southeastern Conference by Baseball America. He was also ranked as the fifth best MLB 2011 Draft prospect in the SEC and the 21st best prospect in the nation. UK kicks off its season on February 18th in Charleston and plays its first game in Lexington on February 23rd against Eastern Michigan. - The 12th ranked men's tennis team travels to Champaign today to take on the 16th ranked Illini. The team dropped one to top-ranked Virginia last weekend but look to Bounce Back (Happy late birthday, Coach Cal) against Illinois. The Cats have already qualified for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships this season, which will be played in Seattle from February 18th to 21st. - And finally, the women's tennis team is making their way to my stomping grounds today to take on the 19th ranked Northwestern Lady Wildcats. I'd just like to apologize in advance to the team and say, 'Yes. It's always this cold here'. The match is being played at 7 and, if you're into this kind of thing, there will be live stats.
