Gilchrist not going to be a Cat

by: Thomas Beisner06/13/08
Hey, look! A Reggie Hanson sighting! According to The Baltimore Sun, it looks like big man Gus Gilchrist will be transferring to South Florida. Gilchrist was said to be considering Kentucky and West Virginia along with the Bulls but apparently fell for the charming combination of miserable humidity and the poopiest major conference arena in the country that only USF could offer. It was never really clear how involved UK got with Gilchrist and most of the Kentucky-related info around him mostly took place on message boards and in vaguely worded stories that said he was "rumored" to be interested in UK. So, in my eyes, you can't lose what you never had. The 6'9" center, formerly known as "Augustus", was ranked as the 14th best center in the class of 2007 and was recruited by the Cats originally before signing with Virginia Tech. Gilchrist later asked out of that letter of intent after the on-campus shootings and transferred to Maryland, where he has yet to play a game, giving him four years of remaining eligibility.  Gilchrist's departure adds to the IU Lite situation going on in College Park, where Bobby Maze and Tyree Evans backed out of their commitments and incoming recruit Sean Mosley is yet to qualify.  Tough times to be Tom Crean, Lute Olsen and Gary Williams. More importantly, now that there is no chance of Gilchrist being a future Cat, we can all make fun of what takes place about 20 seconds into this video.  BTW...he earned MVP honors in that game.
