High School Football Roundup: Raceland, Pulaski County pick up important district wins

An increase in COVID-19 cases and inclement weather limited the amount of Kentucky high school football games played on Oct. 23. Kroger’s KSR Game of the Week between Bardstown and E-Town was one of the many movers, postponed until tonight at 8 pm ET. Despite the circumstances, there was still plenty of exciting action across the Commonwealth on Friday night.

Upset in Class A – Raceland 23 Paintsville 20

Raceland overcame a 13-point deficit to knock off Paintsville 23-20. Peyton Ison drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired.  The Ram’s defense held Paintsville to 3 1st downs after halftime. This means Paintsville will likely be traveling to Raceland in the second round of the playoffs. The Tigers were ranked #1 in Class A in last week’s KSR and AP rankings. Pikeville will likely reclaim the top spot in Class A. The Panthers, who were #2 in the KSR and AP rankings, defeated Raceland 28-7 to start the year.

Wild Pirate – Pulaski County 15 Southwestern 13

Pulaski County defeated Southwestern 15-13 in exciting fashion. Southwestern knew what was coming but simply couldn’t stop it. Pulaski County inserted Tristan Cox as QB on the final drive. The Purdue linebacker commit came in and ran the wildcat, or as Pulaski County calls it the “Wild Pirate” formation, every single play. He methodically moved them down the field before rushing for a touchdown with six seconds left. Without any timeouts remaining, had he been tackled the game would have ended. The 6-foot-3 235-pound Cox reminded me of Benny Snell running the Wildcat for UK. The win likely means that Pulaski County will be hosting Southwestern in the second round of the playoffs.

QB Watch

Gavin Wimsatt was 15-of-26 for 228 yards and 3 TDs (2 passing, 1 rushing) to lead undefeated #14 Owensboro to a 42-0 victory over Grayson County. Wimsatt added 58 yards rushing on 7 carries.

Caden Veltkamp was 5-of-8 for 90 yards in #6 South Warren’s 49-8 victory over Christian County.  Veltkamp threw TD passes of 50 and 10 yards, both to Arvin Bell.  The Spartans remain perfect on the season.

UK commit Kaiya Sheron was off last night since #13 Somerset did not play.  His leg got banged up last week against LCA.  If you missed it, check out last week’s postgame interview where he gave an update on his leg and talked about his commitment to UK.
