How Kentucky commits performed during third week of high school football

14 of Kentucky football’s 16 class of 2024 commits were in action this past week, the third of the high school football season.

Some of the top performances came from future Wildcats LB Elijah Groves, WR Hardley Gilmore, and TE Willie Rodriguez. QB Cutter Boley, DB Terhyon Nichols, and ATH Quaysheed Scott also flashed moments of brilliance, while RB Tovani Mizell and IOL Jadon Lafontant were off this week. How did they all do for their respective high school teams? Let’s dive right in and find out.

Cutter Boley (QB) 6-5, 200 | Lexington Christian Academy (Hodgenville, KY)
4-star: No. 140 overall, No. 9 QB

  • After winning shootouts the first two weeks, Cutter Boley and Lexington Christian Academy had to grind out a 31-13 win over Pikeville. It wasn’t the best performance from Boley either. He finished 14-22 for 160 passing yards with no touchdowns or interceptions but did run six times for 44 yards and one score. He also lost a fumble in the redzone. LCA will hit the road to take on Christian Academy-Louisville in a top-10 matchup on Friday.

Terhyon Nichols (CB) 5-11, 185 | Withrow (Cincinnati, OH)
4-star: No. 196 overall, No. 22 CB

  • Terhyon Nichols and Withrow open the season 2-0 following a 42-6 win over Lima on Friday. Nichols recorded at least one tackle for loss, one interception, and one fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown. He also caught two passes on offense. Withrow will take on St. Xavier (OH) on Friday in a high-profile matchup.

Elijah Groves (LB) 6-3, 210 | East Robertson (Cross Plains, TN)
4-star: No. 231 overall, No. 22 LB

  • Elijah Groves and East Robertson are now 3-0 on the season after beating Monterey 20-7 on Friday. Groves finished with five total tackles and one interception that he returned 12 yards. But he was even more impressive on offense, hauling in three catches for 82 yards and one touchdown. He also ran the ball once for 10 yards and even returned a kick 30 yards and two punts for a total of 26 yards. But that’s not all! Groves was also the punter for East Robertson, punting three times for an average of 42.7 yards. He finished with 160 all-purpose yards. The Indians will play Sycamore on Friday.

Hardley Gilmore (WR) 6-1, 165 | Pahokee (Belle Glade, FL)
4-star: No. 282 overall, No. 39 WR

  • Hardley Gilmore and Pahokee avenged last week’s loss with a 29-6 victory over Inlet Groves on Friday. Gilmore was much better this time around too, catching five balls for 56 yards. He also lined up on defense, registering one tackle, an interception return for 40 yards, and two pass deflections. He also returned two punts for 10 total yards. Pahokee will return to the field on Friday against Palm Beach Lakes.

Tovani Mizell (RB) 6-1, 195 | Western (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
3-star: No. 523 overall, No. 43 RB

  • Off week for Tovani Mizell and Western. He’ll return to action on Friday, Sept. 15 against St. Thomas Aquinas.

Jiquavious Marshall (ATH) 6-4, 180 | Westside (Macon, GA)
3-star: No. 545 overall, No. 20 ATH

  • The Westside Seminoles moved to 3-0 on Friday with a 26-6 victory over Morrow. In the win, Jiquavious Marshall caught five balls on offense for 48 yards while also recording two tackles on defense. Westside will play again on Friday against Rutland.

Aba Selm (IOL) 6-4, 295 | Simon Kenton (Independence, KY)
3-star: No. 616 overall, No. 48 IOL

  • After having last week’s game canceled due to weather, Simon Kenton returned on Friday for a home matchup against No. 6 Covington Catholic and TE Willie Rodriguez. Unfortunately, Selm’s squad struggled, losing 50-12. Simon Kenton did not allow a sack and managed to run for 120 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown behind Selm. The Pioneers will take on No. 14 Beechwood on Friday.

David Washington Jr. (WR) 5-10, 180 | St. Joseph’s Prep School (Philadelphia, PA)
3-star: No. 803 overall, No. 124 WR

  • Following a tough loss to nationally-ranked IMG Academy (FL) last week, St. Joseph’s Prep School and David Washington Jr. took out their frustrations with a 42-0 smashing of St. Peter’s Prep on Saturday. Stats for St. Joseph’s Prep were not made available. They’ll return to action on Friday against Lakeland.

Caleb Redd (EDGE) 6-4, 220 | DeSmet (Saint Louis)
3-star: No. 834 overall, No. 60 EDGE

  • Caleb Redd and DeSmet snuck out of Saturday with a 10-0 win over Glenbard West to reach 3-0 on the young season. Stats were not available from this game, but you can watch Redd work in the highlights below where he is seen causing plenty of havoc in the backfield. DeSmet will play Chaminade on Friday.

Wille Rodriguez (TE) 6-4, 225 | Covington Catholic (Covington, KY)
3-star: No. 893 overall, No. 48 TE

  • No. 6 Covington Catholic and Willie Rodriguez moved to 3-0 on the season after a 50-12 win over IOL Aba Selm and Simon Kenton. Rodriguez continued his touchdown streak, recording his third in as many games. He finished with just one reception, but he ran it 59 yards for a score. On defense, he forced and recovered a fumble while also totaling five tackles (one for loss). The Colonels will take on Dixie Heights this Friday.

Antwan Smith (LB) 6-3, 195 | Westlake (Atlanta, GA)
3-star: No. 919 overall, No. 88 LB

  • Antwan Smith and Westlake barely made it to a 3-0 record after beating Cedar Groves on Friday 46-41. Stats were not made available for either team. Up next for Smith is a matchup on Friday against Southwest DeKalb.

Steven Soles (LB) 6-2, 215 | Powell (Powell, TN)
3-star: No. 922 overall, No. 89 LB

  • Steven Soles and Powell dropped its second straight game with a 35-21 loss to Oak Ridge on Thursday. Soles recorded a tackle for loss and a pass deflection. Next up is a home game against Heritage on Friday.

Hayes Johnson (IOL) 6-3, 295 | Taylor County (Campbellsville, KY)
3-star: No. 1,082 overall, No. 96 IOL

  • The Kroger KSR Game of the Week traveled to Campbellsville on Friday to watch Hayes Johnson and Taylor County smack Elizabethtown 42-13. Behind Johnson, the Cardinals ran for 290 yards on 28 carries for four touchdowns. Taylor County will play next on Friday against LaRue County.

Quaysheed Scott (ATH) 6-0, 185 | Marion (Marion, SC)
3-star: No. 1,182 overall, No. 58 ATH

  • Quaysheed Scott and Marion are off to a 3-0 start this season after demolishing Central 34-7 on Friday. Scott recorded one rush for three yards to go along with three catches for 47 yards. Most notably, he returned a kickoff 76 yards for a score. On defense, Scott was credited with six total tackles, three of them solo. Marion will play Hemingway on Friday.

Jadon Lafontant (IOL) 6-3, 315 | Brunswick School (Greenwich, CT)
3-star: No. 1,244 overall, No. 107 IOL

  • Off week for Jadon Lafontant and Brunswick School. They begin their season on Saturday against the Loomis Chaffee School.

Jacob Kauwe (K) 6-2, 200 | Billings West (Billings, MT)
3-star: No. 1,739 overall, No. 7 K

  • Jacob Kauwe and Billings West fell to 1-2 on the season with a 21-14 loss to Helena on Friday. Kauwe hit two field goals, one from 40 yards out and one from 24. Billings West will play again on Friday against Russell.
