Is The Shining's Danny Torrance Your College Biology Teacher?

by: CMTomlin10/11/13
halla If you're like me, you find few films as truly spooky and frightening as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Jack Nicholson's performance as a mentally unraveling writer stranded with his family in a deserted mountain hotel has become one of, if not the, most famous horror movie performance in history (perhaps second only to Linda Blair's Reagan in The Exorcist), and Kubrick's direction brought a feeling of loneliness and insanity to the screen in a great way. Though it's well-chronicled that Stephen King himself never cared for Kubrick's depiction of his novel, The Shining remains a cinema classic. It could also be argued five year-old Danny Lloyd, who played Nicholson's son Danny Torrance, is the true star of the shining, as his character rises to the center of the action as his father loses his mind. Danny Torrance was just a mop-topped, cute child actor in 1980, but where is he now? According to a recent story in the New York Daily News, a famous Kentuckian has been in our midst without our even knowing it.  Dan Lloyd, once child star of The Shining and having escaped the trappings of Hollywood child-actor danger, now teaches biology at Elizabethtown Community College. Lloyd, according to the story, left acting at age fourteen and headed back to the Midwest, where he attended college, worked on a farm and now teaches right here in the bluegrass. If you see him, say hi. Tell him how great he was in The Shining. And if you know him, tell him if he's willing I'd love to interview him here at Funkhouser. Hit me up, Dan, wherever you are. You're Kentucky royalty. We love you.
