It's summer, there's not much going on, bear with us

by:Intern08/17/06
The positive vibes streaming from the UK football headquarters all summer have provided the faithful with the alien feelings of hope and optimism. Today, however, well…let’s just say it was more like what we’re accustomed to: Our Rob Gidel informed me a week ago that a big name was going to be sitting it out this year due to un-Auburn like classroom savvy. And just as he is 60% of the time, Rob was correct. Starting Soph. OL Aaron Miller will have to sit the season out, and has reportedly gone home for the time being…undoubtedly to study more I’m sure. Grim news piled on as two Wildcats caught the injury bug early: Fr. WR Darrell Stevens has a damaged ankle and Fr. DB Ahmad Grigsby will likely need surgery for a bum wrist. Although you could look at this as the annual sign of doom, coming out of fall practice with (hopefully) only three down is by no means dire. In punting news: Kentucky Sports Report’s Lonny Demaree is reporting that incumbent Tim Masthay has failed to solidify full-time duties. Brooks even admitted that Masthay has taken a step backward from where he was last season. So let’s see, a step backward from 20 yard knuckler punts…Glenn Pakulak, where art thou? The new basketball practice facility finally has a name after an Eastern Kentucky business man wrote a $6 million dollar check to Mitch Barnhart and friends. Joe Craft, of Tulsa, OK brought the fund-raising total to $29.2 million, $800,000 short of the project price tag. Come on Joe, you couldn’t serve up the extra stew? Business a little slow? The next highest donor was the Nutter family, with a $2.75 mill. wad. Hey, you already have your facility Nutter, try buying some blue-chippers. Trouble in Paradise....I'm kidding...in Arkansas I love it when headlines are also the punch lines (see the ill-received post on Matt McCutchan). University of Arkansas (Do UA alums exist? If you or someone you know attended Arkansas please let me know, I’ve never spoken to one) head coach Houston Nutt announced that returning starting QB Casey Dick will be holding the clipboard in favor of Robert Johnson. So, to recap: Nutt favors Johnson over Dick. Sorry mom. They'll Be Back This is out of left field, but it strummed my nostalgia chords with full force. Foxsports.com writer Peter Schrager previewed the upcoming NY Giant’s season for deadspin.com, but instead gave homage to the Starter Jacket fad of the early 90’s (or of last year if you’re in Mexico) and all of its socio-dynamic splendor. I, entranced by the bright colors and prowess of Grand Ma-Ma, opted for trendy Charlotte Hornets sheath. Of course I had my UK jacket as well, except my accommodating but sensible parents opted for the knockoff Apex brand for the blue and white.
