Jonah Hill's Monday News and Views

by:Matt Jones02/26/12
jonah hill At one point, tonight shaped up to be a huge night in television...The Oscars, NBA All-Star Game, Daytona 500 and "Eastbound and Down" all seemed to be headed to one clash for my television viewing attention. However once rain took over Daytona, I taped Eastbound and the All-Star Game became boring (at least until the end), I ended up watching the Oscars. And there, I saw the nomination of master thespian Jonah Hill for Best Supporting Actor. I saw "Moneyball" and really liked it, for a variety of reasons. The idea of doing what you enjoy and believe, while going against the grain is one that I can relate to and I thought Pitt and Jonah were great in the film. But if you had ever told me, especially in the "Superbad" era, that Jonah Hill would have been nominated for an Oscar, I would have told you to stop calling my house late at night. The absurdity to me of Hill on the Oscar stage was only previously matched by the Three Six Mafia winning for "Its Hard Out There for a Pimp", and seeing his face on the screen with the other nominees did make me laugh. After losing a ton of weight (and looking rather sickly), he seems to have put much of it back on. That is good...skinny Jonah Hill doesn't win awards or make us laugh...he just creeps us out. Fat Jonah Hill has Oscar written all over him. To the three big stories of the weekend: 1. Will Kentucky Lose?: Kentucky gritted out another victory on Saturday, this time at home to a rather hot-shooting Vanderbilt team. The Cats were slow starting in the first half, especially on defense, where they gave up more open looks than at virtually any point this entire season. But they got back on track in the second half, led by Anthony Davis, who is quickly becoming my choice for Player of the Year. For most of the season, I have admired Davis's ability and performance, but been of the belief that what Thomas Robinson has done at Kansas was more impressive...they could be a #1 seed and I am not sure that they are all that good. But after watching Davis the last three weeks, the facts are undeniable. He does everything you want on the court and literally dominates the game from start to finish. Defensively, he is the best player in America by leaps and bounds and he is becoming one of the most efficient offensively as well. He may be the best Center in UK history (if you consider Issel a Power Forward) and I think even old-timers would agree he is the best defender to ever wear the Blue and White. It is time for him to win the first National Player of the Year award in school history (besides John Wall's Rupp Award). Now as for the second question after the game, should Kentucky lose a game before the tournament, the answer is of course not. Losing is for losers and those that believe it is a requirement that Kentucky lose are missing the point. Most teams lose games during the regular season because they aren't that good or play in super-tough leagues. UK is that good and the SEC isn't super tough. But losing a game to prove a point is silly. Kentucky will go into the NCAA Tournament in a close battle with some team and have a chance to either survive and advance, or be upset. But losing a game in February will have no impact either way. Teams that are overconfident or cocky might benefit from a loss. But this team is narrowly focused on a huge goal. Losing serves no purpose. 2. Jeff Goodman Apologizes to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: In the postgame yesterday, MKG surprised the world by telling reporters that he was planning on returning to Kentucky and intended to graduate. He later backed away from that slightly by tweeting that he would do what was best for him at the end of the year, but the comments can, if nothing else, be seen as a sign that he is considering a return. However CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman had this to say about the comments: I like Jeff, but I found that a bit patronizing and unnecessary, and I told him so. Well I wasn't the only one. Not only did a number of UK fans do the same, but Gilchrist's mother did as well, saying: She then responded to a comment from Kentucky's own Oscar Combs this way: And then one more comment towards Goodman: Goodman waited 24 hours and then tweeted this apology for his comments: The lesson in all of this...don't mess with MKG's mother. I love that she took up for her son publicly and it showcases that in the Twitter world, reporters can be held responsible for what they said. Goodman has a habit of writing his own personal opinions with absolute certainty, and in this case, he was rightly called out for it. I think it is good that he apologized and I give him credit for doing so (I know some think his apology isnt really an apology, but most reporters would never even go this far on anything they said). But I am really impressed with Gilchrist's mother and her decision to speak out. Her son is a tremendous young man who she has raised unbelievably well and she won't let little comments about him go unnoticed. Good for her. 3. UK Women Get it Done: A big shout out to the UK Hoops' team for winning the school's first SEC Women's title since 1982. It is such an impressive accomplishment for a school that just a decade or so ago had the worst women's program in the league. Now they are a perennial power and have the potential to be even better next season. As the Hoopsters go into the postseason, the very real possibility of two Final Four runs exist in Lexington and Coach Matthew Mitchell and his girls deserve all the credit in the world. A picture of them at the celebration (which had a great attendance by UK fans) helps illustrate their tremendous accomplishment: Two other quick notes to start Monday... First, today is the last day to vote for Calipari in the Charity Challenge. For reasons that are hard to imagine, Bob Huggins is somehow still leading this. I don't know what is happening in West Virginia, but every time KSR gives a push, Cal gets a 3 percentage point swing. He is down 1% now, so lets get the lead back.
