Kentucky is one of the best underdogs in college football

There might not be any other program in college football that loves being the underdog more than Kentucky. Over the last three years, the results are hard to argue against.

In three SEC games this year, Kentucky has entered games against Florida, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State as a one-possession underdog. The Cats won two of those three games outright and were a pre-snap penalty away from likely winning a third.

Mark Stoops’ teams typically play their best games as a dog. The numbers since Lynn Bowden Jr. took over at quarterback in the middle of the 2019 season do not lie.

  • Kentucky is 11-2-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last 14 games as a dog
  • Kentucky has seven outright wins over Missouri (+10, 2019), Virginia Tech (+2, 2019), Tennessee (+6, 2020), Florida (+7, 2021 and +6, 2022), Louisville (+3, 2021), and Mississippi State (+3.5, 2022) during this stretch.
  • Five of those seven outright wins have come away from Kroger Field
  • Only Alabama and Georgia have covered the spread as a favorite against Kentucky during this stretch

After the bye week, Kentucky is a projected underdog in two games. Both Georgia and Tennessee are in the top five of the AP Top 25 and will be betting favorites against the Wildcats. Stoops and his team entered the season with high expectations with hopes of competing for an SEC East crown. For that to happen, UK will need to pull off another upset on Rocky Top.

Kentucky is a perfect 6-0 ATS as an underdog with Will Levis under center with four outright wins. The Cats will find themselves in a position they are very comfortable in on Oct. 29 at Neyland Stadium with ESPN on the call in primetime.

Recent history tells us that a pretty big upset could be on the way.
