The University of Kentucky Track and Field Men’s 4×100 meter relay team channeled their inner Ricky Bobby on Friday at the NCAA Division I East First Rounds and went fast. I mean, fast-fast. The team broke the school record with a blazing time of 38.53 seconds. This bested their own school record, one they set earlier this year. Prior to this season, the previous record of 38.81 seconds had stood since 1995. It also marks the fastest Division I time in the country at both the East and West First Rounds.

Shake and bake, baby.

Freshman Shavique Bascus, junior Clinton Muunga, freshman Miles Jones, and graduate student Kennedy Lightner were the four Wildcats to etch their name in school history. They also punched their ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon which will be held June 5-8.

Overall, seven athletes on the men’s side qualified for the NCAA Championships including junior Luke Brown, who finished fourth in the triple jump, posting a distance of 53-feet-0.25-inches. That’s 16.16 meters according to the rest of the world.

Lightner, who was part of the record-setting relay team, qualified as an individual for his third-straight outdoor championships in the 200 meter dash. Lightner posted a super quick time of 20.14, a personal best, and good for the second-best time in school history.

The women’s side of Kentucky’s Track and Field team will finish up the NCAA East First Rounds today to see who advances to Oregon, however, junior Payton Phillips already qualified in the pole vault. She hoisted herself up over the bar set at 14-feet-1.25-inches (4.30 meters) tying for the win, and setting her personal best).
