Take one off the big board. The Kentucky coaching staff received some bad news late Saturday night. BJ Mayes did not leave Texas A&M without committing to the Aggies.

The UAB cornerback previously visited Arkansas. After making a pitstop at A&M, he was scheduled to take a trip to Lexington for an official visit. The Houston native fell in love with Mike Elko’s staff in College Station, pulled the trigger and committed during his Texas A&M official visit.

Mayes began his career at Incarnate Word. He transferred to UAB for the 2023 season and in 12 games he recorded 41 tackles, one tackle for loss, 10 pass breakups, and two interceptions. Using PFF data, Mayes has logged 790 coverage snaps during his collegiate career and has recorded three interceptions and 24 pass breakups.

Kentucky had zeroed in on two targets, Mayes and OT Xavier Bausley. Kentucky got Bausley on campus, but it’s discouraging to see a swing and a miss in the secondary.

Nevertheless, this is not the last opportunity for Kentucky to land players from the transfer portal. The second window — after bowl games for one weekend — is the shortest window of opportunity and produces the fewest amount of moves each offseason. A third wave of players will hit the transfer portal following spring practice, giving the Kentucky coaching staff another chance to fortify the depth chart ahead of the 2024 season.
