The 2012 National Championship team can add another trophy to the shelf. The Associated Press Top 25 panel voted the 2011-12 Kentucky Wildcats the best college basketball team of the decade. The 2012 Cats beat the 2017-18 Villanova championship team for the honor, appearing on 21 of the 26 ballots.

I don’t need to remind you of the 2011-12 team’s accomplishments, but here’s a rundown from UK Athletics:

  • Snapped a 14-year title drought with the program’s eighth national championship.
  • Finished the season with 38 wins, still tied for the most in NCAA Division I history with the 2014-15 Kentucky team
  • Freshman Anthony Davis won all but one of the major national player of the year awards and set a school record for blocked shots with 186, in addition to averaging a team-best 14.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Although he was just 1-10 from the floor, Davis was also named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player after taking over the championship game vs. Kansas with 16 rebounds, six blocks and three steals.
  • Six NBA Draft picks, still tied for the most in NCAA Division I history with the 2014-15 Kentucky team, including No. 1 and No. 2 overall: Davis (No. 1), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (No. 2), Terrence Jones (No. 18), Marquis Teague (No. 29), Doron Lamb (No. 42), Darius Miller (No. 46). Of those six, three are still playing in the NBA with Davis becoming an annual NBA All-Star selection and MVP candidate.

One Shining Moment time!
