Kentucky's Abby Steiner shatters Women's 200M collegiate record

Kentucky track and field star Abby Steiner is a new record-holder, shattering the women’s 200-meter collegiate record with a time of 21.80 seconds at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Steiner previously tied the NCAA Championships 200-meter record with a qualifying time of 22.05 seconds, a personal best at the time, before breaking the record to earn the title on Saturday.

Steiner also qualified for the 100-meter final with a sub-11-second semifinal time before earning bronze on Saturday, finishing with a time of 11.08 seconds (+0.2). A participant in the 4x100M relay, she also earned silver alongside Shadajah Ballard, Masai Russell and Karimah Davis with a time of 42.55, giving her three medals on the day.

The senior track star’s time in Lexington has been nothing short of historic, racking up a deep list of accolades from 2019 to 2022. Take a look at the complete list:

Back in 2021, the Kentucky women’s team totaled 13 points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to finish in 21st place, the seventh-straight time that the Wildcats have placed in the top 25. UK’s best finish was as national runner-up in 2015.

The men’s team tied for 15th place last year – UK’s best showing in seven years – at the 2021 NCAA Championships with 17 points. The UK men’s team’s best ever NCAA Outdoor finish was seventh in 1996 on 22 points.
