Kentucky added two Quadrant 1 wins to its tournament resume last week in No. 22 Mississippi State and No. 9 Kansas. As we do each week, let’s take a look at the Cats’ team sheet, which is looking better and better with each passing game.

If you’re not familiar with team sheets, they’re what the Selection Committee uses to pick and seed teams in the NCAA Tournament. Wins are sorted into four quadrants using the opponent’s NET ranking:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30; Neutral 1-50; Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75; Neutral 51-100; Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160; Neutral 101-200; Away 136-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-plus; Neutral 201-plus; Away 241-plus

Here’s Kentucky’s team sheet through January 27:

A few notes:

— This week, Kentucky can add another Q1 win at Florida on Saturday and a Q2 win at Vanderbilt tomorrow night.

— That win over Louisville is looking better and better. Since last Monday, the Cards have jumped four spots in the NET rankings. North Carolina is also up, from No. 12 to No. 9.

— If Duke and Tennessee aren’t first in the NET rankings, who is? Virginia, followed by Gonzaga.

— Kentucky’s average NET win right now is 129, while their average NET loss is 37.

— Kentucky actually rose to No. 7 in the NET rankings yesterday, but is back down to No. 8 today, switching spots with Houston after the Cougars’ win over Tulsa. That seemed weird to me, so I looked at Houston’s team sheet. The are 2-1 in Quadrant 1 games, their best win being over LSU back in December. The Tigers are ranked 15th in the NET right now, making February 12’s game at Rupp bigger than you might think.
