KHSAA announces initial steps for return to action

The KHSAA has announced its initial steps in high school sports returning to action in the near future. In a virtual meeting this afternoon, the KHSAA Board of Control voted to end the current dead period starting Monday, June 1, with teams being allowed to hold meetings of ten people or less through June 14. From there, workouts will be allowed to resume beginning June 15 under state guidelines. This includes low-impact sports such as golf and cross country beginning practice (no competition) and high-impact sports such as football, volleyball, soccer, and field hockey beginning initial workouts and exercises starting on the same day with groups of ten or less. The Board of Control also voted in favor of eliminating the dead period from June 25 through July 9, with KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett noting he "[doesn't] think it's feasible to start, stop, and start again." While plenty of noteworthy updates came from the meeting, there is still a bit of uncertainty on the resumption of full-on practices, scrimmages, and games for contact sports like football, soccer, and volleyball. While they will be allowed to work out, the KHSAA is awaiting more data from the CDC, along with guidance from the governor before those sports can continue on a complete basis. At the end of the day, though, it's apparent they are hoping to get things rolling, and do it soon. "Let’s get these kids back with these coaches sooner rather than later," Tackett said.
