Day one action of the 2022 KHSAA State Baseball Tournament wrapped up on Thursday night. Check out our recap of all four games. Day two of the opening round continues throughout Friday.

Boyd County 3, #7 Danville 0

Boyd County senior Jake Biggs pitched a one-hit shutout to lead Boyd to a 3-0 win over #7 Danville in the opening game of the tournament. He struck out 11. Danville had not been shut out all year. It was the Lions’ first state tournament win since 2005.

Woodford County 12, DeSales 9

Trailing 7-3, Woodford County put up a seven-run 6th inning to go 10-7 and held on from there. James Hollon went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs for Woodford.

#17 Russell County 2, #13 Madison Central 1

Russell County’s Nathan Lawson allowed only two hits and no earned runs in the 2-1 victory. He struck out six and walked none.

#6 Beechwood 7, #5 Owensboro Catholic 6

Jackson Roseburrough delivered the game-winning hit, Brice Estep went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Torin O’Shea pitched two scoreless extra innings to help Beechwood defeat Owensboro Catholic in the highly anticipated first-round showdown.

Tied at 6 in the bottom of the 8th, Ben Meier walked. After a pop-out, he took second base on a wild pitch and scored on Roseburrough’s base hit to win it for the Tigers.

Owensboro Catholic scored two in the 5th and three more in the 6th to force extra innings.
