We’ve reached a slow point on the sports calendar in the Bluegrass State. Luckily, coffee golf will get our Saturday rolling on a hot July Saturday.

Out at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England, it is moving day at the 151st Open Championship. Brian Harman has surprised many with a 67-65 to fire 10-under with only one bogey in 36 holes to give himself a five-shot lead. The 36-year-old Georgia alum owns two career PGA Tour wins and can probably bring home his first major championship title if he can play par golf over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood is another player looking for his first major championship title, and the English pro will have the support of the huge crowds at Royal Liverpool. Coverage started before the sun came up in the States, but the last group will hit the tee box at 10:30 a.m. ET. The action can be found on NBC.

Now let’s unpack everything we learned from a busy Friday.

SECMD content is still rolling in

KSR had a wild four-day run in Nashville for SEC Media Days. We’re still attempting to unpack everything we consumed during our long stay in the Music City.

Drew Franklin, Freddie Maggard, Steven Peake, Nick Roush, and myself aren’t done with our talking season coverage. On Friday, we learned that Kentucky was picked to finish fourth in the SEC East via the preseason media poll, and four players were named to All-SEC teams. But the best content can be found on KSR’s YouTube Channel.

Franklin and Roush jumped in front of the camera to give out their All-Media team from SEC Media Days. Late-night eateries, On3 colleagues, partying talking heads, and the SEC’s hospitality are all included. Want a hearty Saturday laugh? Smash that play button.

Over at KSR+, we will be rolling out more content next week but dropped a long-form feature on Friday that includes the five biggest statements from Nashville. We dive deeper into Lane Kiffin’s monologue on NIL and the transfer portal plus get into the popular play-calling questions that highlighted the week.

More football coverage is coming your way this weekend. Stay tuned.

Some interesting recruiting developments

Jacob Smith and Jerod Smith are twin brothers who originally hail from Somerset, Kentucky. However, the blue-chip football recruits moved to a prep school in Connecticut and became top-300 recruits. Both Smiths are committed to Michigan, but a new development could give Kentucky a puncher’s chance at getting back involved in this recruitment.

The Smith twins have transferred to Corbin (Ky.) High for their final season of high school football. In Class 4A, the Redhounds could be considered the favorite to bring home a state title now. Both prospects are expected to enroll early at Michigan. If UK is to make a move, it needs to happen fast.

Elsewhere, KSR’s Zack Geoghegan gives a rundown of what Kentucky targets to watch as the season inches closer. Things have gotten quiet on the recruiting trail over the last two weeks but should not stay like that for long.

More reaction from GLOBL Jam

Football got most of the attention this week, but the KSR basketball team is still unpacking the developments we saw in Canada. The Wildcats looked mighty impressive at GLOBL Jam. On Friday afternoon, Jack Pilgrim and Shawn Smith jumped into the virtual podcast studio to record another episode of Sources Say.

Pilgrim and Smith discussed Ugonna Onyenso‘s injury, if another big is needed, and gave a full recap of GLOBL Jam. Smash that subscribe button.

Vote for Tristan Bowling to be the next Mullet Champion

Bluegrass native Tristan Bowling is going for gold, and we’re not talking about the World Cup. At the 2023 Mullet Championship, the Manchester, Kentucky native is a serious contender in the event.

What started out as curiosity has turned into a way of life for our little man. We started growing his mullet when he was a little over a year old but we never imagined it would turn out to be what it is. After about a year of growing his mullet he was (begging) to get compliments on his hair so we decided to put him in his first in person mullet contest and he was blessed to win. A couple months later we entered him into another in person contest and he was blessed to win again. We discovered the USA Mullet Championship after he won his second contest but it was over by then so for the last year this has been our focus to enter him into this contest and show our little man and his mullet off to the world. It would be an absolute honor for him to win this and keep what has become a journey for our little man alive.

USA Mullet Championship

Bowling’s date called into KSR on Friday and notified the Big Blue Nation of the event. Fans are allowed to vote once per day, and voting ends on Monday night at midnight. The flow is incredible. Let’s get Tristan into the winner’s circle.
