After 20-plus years, the Lexington Legends have undergone a complete rebrand.

On Monday morning, Lexington’s most popular professional baseball franchise announced a name change. Moving forward, the Lexington Legends will now be known as the Lexington Counter Clocks. The new name, according to a press release sent out by the team, “pays homage to Kentucky’s historic spirit of independence.”

Still confused? Us too. But the Counter Clocks’ name does have a deeper meaning. And yes, it has to do with horses.

“Traditionally, horses in England raced around a grass track in a clockwise direction. However, declaring independence from the British way, early Kentuckians began to race their horses in the opposite direction – counter-clockwise – and on dirt. The world – and baseball – ultimately followed Kentucky’s lead.”

Along with the name rebrand, the Counter Clocks will introduce two new mascots, Hoss and Dinger — “two fun-loving characters that encapsulate the energetic nature of the brand.”

It was only a few months ago that the Legends, along with Wild Health Field, which is where the team has played since 2001 and has been renamed multiple times, were sold to Nathan Lyons, who owns a Nashville-based company named Vintage South Development.

“Throughout the process of developing our new team name and visual identity, we heard from hundreds of members of the local community, who all shared one thing in common: a deep pride of their state and of its rich history,” Lexington Counter Clocks owner Nathan Lyons said in the press release. “We have worked hard to reflect this hometown pride – and the significant role Central Kentucky has played in sports history – in our new name and visual identity. We’re thrilled to introduce the Lexington Counter Clocks to the community today, and we’re looking forward to what promises to be an exciting season of baseball.”

In 2021, the franchise’s first season with the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an MLB partner league, the Legends won the Atlantic League Championship. They finished the 2022 season with a 56-76 overall record but will look to make a return to the top in 2023 as the Counter Clocks.

Lexington is also home to another minor league franchise, the Wild Health Genomes, which joined the ALPB back in Feb. 2022. However, the Genomes’ spot in the league was replaced following the 2022 season and it is unknown if the team will continue.

The Lexington Counter Clocks season begins on April 28 with a three-game homestand against the York Revolution. Tickets for the full 2023 season can be purchased here. New merchandise, featuring the Lexington Counter Clocks name and visual identity, is available here.
