Here's What Saturday Night Live Looks Like in Other Countries

Unless you were in Korea this past weekend — and if you do, hang on, because the government has some questions to ask you — you probably are unaware of the fact that teen actress Chloë Grace Moretz became the first American actor to host Saturday Night Live‘s Korean affiliate (known in the country as SNLK). You may not be surprised to find out that the Korean iteration of Saturday Night Live looks strikingly similar to the American original, as is indicated by the sketch below, which looks like the tried-and-true American SNL sketch premise of “boy/girl brings home girlfriend/boyfriend to meet parents and hilarity ensues” and also includes Moretz throwing a handful of kimchi into a her presumed boyfriend’s face — yes, that old gag.

While SNL South Korea is currently in its fourth season (and if they’re enticing American actors to guest star, I guess that means they’re doing okay), other versions of the show run or have had short runs all over the world. For example, take a look at a SNL Finland‘s completely copied version of Fred Armisen and Kristin Wiig’s improvisational singing duo Garth & Kat:

In the 1990’s, Germany had great success with its SNL sibling RTL Samstag Nacht, which copied the formula so much it even featured a “late night in the city”-style SNL opening credit sequence complete with the stereotypical “cast member out and about in town looks into the camera and smiles” intro. Then, presumably, an hour and a half of “Sprockets.”

SNL Spain didn’t even last an entire, season, which is shocking when you consider how closely they followed the recipe to replicate the unforgettable Christopher Walken/Will Ferrell “cowbell” sketch for Spanish audiences:

And here’s a dark, weird sketch from SNL Quebec from only a year ago, which features a “wacky masseuse” who accidentally murders his client and several co-workers before police surround the facility and the masseuse takes his own life by his own faulty massage skills. I know, right? As soon as you stop laughing at that premise you can watch it below (SNL Quebec has not been renewed, it should be noted).

Versions of SNL have also popped up in limited capacities in North Africa, Japan and the Middle East, and lately rumors of a Mexican form of the comedy show is in the works, possibly with former cast member Horatio Sanz as a consultant. While that program has yet to air, it hasn’t stopped countless Mexicans from uploading their auditions to YouTube in hopes of being the next comic hit. In fact, just for fun, grab a friend and see which of you can get further through this excruciating casting tape from a budding SNL hopeful:

Keep that dream alive, Walter. We here at Funkhouser believe in you. Go get ’em, pal. You go get ’em.
