The third annual Kroger KSR Hometown Classic produced one of the top football plays you’ll see all year — regardless of the level.

During Friday’s high school football game between Louisville Shawnee and host Jackson County, Shawnee junior defensive back Khamoni Ball pulled down one of the more impressive interceptions ever caught on camera. With Shawnee already leading 28-14 and under three minutes left in the game, Jackson County was driving down the field in hopes of mounting a comeback. But Ball had other plans.

With the Generals hanging around midfield, the Jackson County quarterback lofted a dangerous pass into the air on 2nd and 10. Seemingly out of nowhere, Ball soared a few feet in the air, extended his right arm above everyone else, bent his body backward, and somehow got his hand on the ball. The fact that he was able to come down without losing it was just as impressive as the one-handed grab.

“It was an amazing catch. ESPN Top 10, go ahead and turn it in,” Shawnee head coach Vernon Gibson Jr. said.

It might not have made the SportsCenter Top 10 plays (or at least not yet), but it still caught the eyes of ESPN. Ahead of Week 1 action in the NFL, ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown continued its traditional “You Got Mossed!” segment where Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss highlights big catches every week throughout the season. For those unaware, if you go up and over someone to catch a 50/50 ball, you’ve “Mossed” them.

And who was atop the list to start the 2023 season? Shawnee’s Khamoni Ball.

This is a pretty unique moment for both Ball and Shawnee, a small school out of Louisville’s west end. The Golden Eagles aren’t able to get in front of cameras and members of the media all that often — this play being caught on video is something special.

Once Ball was credited with the interception and everyone’s jaw was picked off the ground, KSR’s Freddie Maggard, who helped organize this budding new series between Shawnee and Jackson County, made sure to promote the highlight as much as possible in hopes of getting it to ESPN. Randy Moss must have agreed with the ridiculousness of this play. We’re glad he did.
