Not only did Travis Perry set a new Lyon County single-game scoring record, but he did so with a special guest in attendance.

On Thursday night, Perry, a four-star class of 2024 shooting guard, dropped 61 points on Dawson Springs with Kentucky head coach John Calipari and assistant coach KT Turner watching from the sidelines. The high school junior received a scholarship offer from the home-state Wildcats back in June, but momentum had seemingly slowed down between the two sides until last night.

“Cal and KT both told me congrats and they were glad to see it and glad to be there! Cal texted me and told me congrats again and glad to witness it!!,” Perry, who visited UK for Big Blue Madness in October, told KSR through text.

Lyon County (25-5), No. 5 in KSR’s latest high school rankings, smashed Dawson Springs 114-56 as Perry scored more by himself than the opposing team did as a whole. Perry is now just 178 points away from breaking the KHSAA all-time scoring record, which is held by Kelly “King” Coleman and his 4,337 career points.

According to the On3 Consensus, Perry is ranked No. 87 overall in the country and is considered the top-ranked junior from the state of Kentucky. Along with UK, the 6-foot-1 point guard holds additional offers from the likes of Creighton, Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Indiana, Purdue, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Michigan, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Virginia. Perry has recently taken visits to a handful of those programs, including Ole Miss, Indiana, Michigan, and Purdue.

Perry has been getting buckets for Lyon County for years now, dating back to his seventh-grade season with the program. He still has one more high school year left to play, but he’s on the verge of taking control of the title of the Commonwealth’s all-time greatest scorer sooner rather than later. Through 28 games played in 2022-23, Perry is tied for second in the state in scoring at 31.0 points per game. He leads the state in threes made per game at 4.1 while his 88.3 shooting percentage from the free-throw line is top five in the state.

With district tournaments starting next week, it won’t be long before Perry and Lyon County look to make a return trip to Rupp Arena for the Sweet 16 in March. The Lyons will take on Livingston Central in the 5th District Tournament on Tuesday.

While we don’t have any footage from Perry’s impressive performance, we do have video of his showdown against Kentucky signee Reed Sheppard from earlier in the season, which you can watch below.
