New Rules for College Basketball Now Official

by: Bobby Reagan06/08/15
hoop-ref There has been a series of rules changes that were approved today by the NCAA for men's basketball. The most notable change is reducing the shot clock from 35 seconds to 30 seconds, in a way to attempt to speed up the game and possessions. This writer is skeptical of how it will impact scoring though as good defenses should be able to take advantage of the shortened clock. In theory a strong defensive team can run a 3/4-court trap to waste time in the backcourt before falling back to a traditional zone or half court man-to-man defense, giving the offense less time to probe. Timeouts have also been changed with each team now having four timeouts for the game opposed to five. Only three timeouts can be preserved for the second half. Willing to take bets on what coach forgets this rule and tries to call five timeouts? Early money is on our dear friend Rick Pitino, who is also a clear-cut favorite to forget the other timeout rule. The other change is coaches are now not allowed to call live-ball timeouts. Defensively, there will be a change with the restricted circle moving from three feet to four feet. Good thing we have a bunch of shot blockers, right? My favorite rule however is the committee's decision to not allow the 10-second count to reset when a timeout is called in the backcourt. This was always one of the more absurd ideas that never rewarded the defense for playing tough for nine seconds. Big kudos to committee head and Belmont head coach Rick Byrd.   What are your guys thoughts on the new rules? Like them or not? Anything else you want to see changed?
