The Kentucky Wildcats were back in action Tuesday afternoon at Celebration High School for the second practice in Orlando of Citrus Bowl week. Today they threw on the shoulder pads and got in a good sweat in the hottest part of an 80-degree day to prepare for Saturday’s sweltering matchup against Iowa. Here are a few things KSR observed from the open portion of the practice, including one notable absence.

Josh Paschal did not Practice

There was one big question entering Citrus Bowl week: will Josh Paschal play? As of Tuesday the answer to that question appears to be ‘no.’ Paschal did not attend Kentucky’s football practice.

Paschal played in all 12 games of his senior season but got “dinged up” in the season finale victory over Louisville. The disruptive defensive end recorded 15.5 tackles for loss, tied for the second-most in the SEC. If Paschal cannot play, it would obviously be a significant loss for the UK defense. However, you cannot question his love for Kentucky football. The first three-time team captain in school history, he’s given everything and then some to this program. If it’s the last we’ve seen of Paschal in blue and white, it’s been one hell of a career.

Transfer Portal Players Practiced

Paschal did not practice, but almost every player in the transfer portal did participate in this afternoon’s action. By keeping everyone in the program for one more game, it’s a win-win for both sides.

Kentucky needs the bodies. Players like Jared Casey, Isaiah Gibson and Moses Douglass are on the depth chart and could have their number called for regular reps against Iowa. As a compromise, they have the green light to put their name in the portal and pursue other options before the spring semester begins, allowing them to participate in spring practice at their next destination. This is another example of why Mark Stoops has been so successful in the transfer portal.

Keaten Upshaw Runs

The first big loss of the season was in the summer when Keaten Upshaw tore a pec muscle. The tight end was unable to play, but today he did get back to work with team, participating in some light work without any contact. Do not sleep on Upshaw entering the 2022 season.

The New Guy

Speaking of transfer portal players, Tashawn Manning announced in December he will transfer from Auburn to Kentucky. The offensive guard will not officially join the program until the spring semester begins, but he is in Orlando for the Citrus Bowl. Manning watched Eric Wolford work with the Big Blue Wall during individual drills and he looks the part.

Bully Boogies

When the music is playing before the action begins, Marquan McCall is probably breaking down to the beat.

He’s always down for a good time, unless that good time involves a roller coaster. You will not see clips of him on The Hulk when the team visits Universal Studios this afternoon.
