r/CFB Has Taken The Media World By Storm

by: Trey Huntsman12/24/17
Welcome to The Internet’s Tailgate. The meaning of ever-popular slogan of the subreddit r/CFB has stayed tried and true through the site’s growth through the last several years. R/CFB is a place for college football fans of all kinds to meet and talk trash to each other and themselves. The subreddit has found a home in the college football community as a place that does not take itself too seriously. “We definitely appeal to the personality that likes fun in everything,” Moderator Bobak Ha’Eri said. “It’s something the younger fan is into, making things fun.” r/CFB was founded in 2009 and has over 332,000 subscribers on Reddit. They have users on six continents (Come on, Antarctica) and have had the likes of Bobby Bowden, Herschel Walker, and Mike Leach take on questions from subscribers. R/CFB is unlike any forum, message board, or blog on the internet. “We're different than most blogs and forums in that we manage to be completely non-team specific but maintain fun discourse in the comment areas that dominate the Reddit experience,” Ha’eri said. “/r/CFB appeals to people who really are passionate about college football, but don't lose their minds over opposing fans.” What r/CFB does is great for the college football community. The Twitter account and subreddit take the time to post about all levels of college football. The brand of r/CFB has grown to give fans a place to feel included. While growing their brand in college football, r/CFB has done a lot of good in the community outside of the subreddit. Through fundraisers with subscribers, r/CFB has raised thousands of dollars for charities such as Toys for Tots and ALS. This year alone, r/CFB raised 8,200 dollars for toys. R/CFB also bought bricks on college campuses, sponsored a locker at Louisiana Monroe for one player, and are the official sponsor of a football team in England. “It's great we can get a large group of fans, across teams and conference affiliations, to band together to sponsor various bricks, lockers, coaches across the country (and the world) because we love college football so much,” Ha’Eri said. “My personal favorite is the locker at ULM, because they let us put the CFB Ball on the little plaque. I also was happy Wyoming let us put the /r/CFB logo on the brick we purchased.” All the quirky ways that r/CFB has given money back to the football world shows their side that does not take themselves too seriously. Their Twitter account is also indicative of that fact. The account has grown as the main way people learn about r/CFB. Ha’Eri is the main personality behind the account and has seen the account jump over 112,000 followers since 2011. The Twitter account gave r/CFB an outlet to share information at media days and show off parts of their subreddit to the outside world. Through Twitter, r/CFB has shown off fun items such as the Fulmer Cup, the Imperialism Map, and their coverage of media days. The fun style of tweeting about college football helped r/CFB gain some notoriety over the last year. ESPN, 24/7, and the Paul Finebaum Show all listed @RedditCFB as a top follow for college football coverage. R/CFB is by no means trying to be on the same reporting level as the AP or high-level journalism sources, but they do provide a news-breaking source that aggregates all college football news into one place. Subscribers of r/CFB get news quicker than anyone else because of the large community that comes together to share stories they find in the wild. The subreddit broke the news this week that Florida State was not actually bowl eligible in 2017. R/CFB went viral after their subscribers dug in deep and found that FSU had not met specific requirements to land in a bowl game. The subreddit brings a lot of fun to the world of college football. Fans are consuming news in a much different way in 2017. College football fans want GIFs, memes, and humor when they come together to talk about the sport. R/CFB gives fans a place that they can have a digital tailgate with people across the world.
