Rick Pitino weighs in on UK's platoon system

Need further proof that Kentucky is the dominant story in college basketball this season? ESPN's Andy Katz devoted a whole segment to Rick Pitino's thoughts on UK's platoon strategy and the one-and-done culture. Pitino was his usual passive aggressive complimentary self in his remarks, telling Katz that John Calipari handles one-and-dones better than anyone, but he wouldn't want the task of replacing four or five players each year, even if Trey Lyles would have been a one-and-done type player had he gone to Louisville. What about the platoon? Rick said that he played 10 players in 1996, but not in two units, and admitted that Calipari is "great at marketing this kind of situation." Pitino said he also believes UK's second platoon will probably be better than the first unit on many teams. (Duh.) Does Pitino think platooning will work? Yes. He told Katz that he thinks Calipari will be able to "get away with platooning" because UK has so much talent. When asked if he believes UK will win the title, Pitino said that in a 7-game series, "there's no question that Kentucky would win," but in one game on one given night, who knows. Nothing groundbreaking here, other than the satisfaction that UK is such a big story this season that even Rick Pitino has to talk about it.
