Smith and Ford standouts at Blue White game

by:Matt Jones04/22/06

The two big stories coming out of today’s Blue-White Spring Game are Alfonso Smith and Demario Ford (where we will match ANY DEAL!!!). The running of redshirt freshman Alfonso Smith showed the jets that we all heard were possible this offseason, displaying great speed on the outside and getting to the corner on a number of occasions. But should be most impressive for UK fans is that Smith is developing into a great runner between the tackles, a skill that Kentucky has needed since the Artose Pinner days. During the game on Saturday, he hit the holes quickly and displayed the running ability that will keep Tony Dixon and Rafeal Little looking behind them throughout the summer.

And from a weak receiving corp, someone had to emerge and Demario Ford (Where Price Sells Cars!!!) was that man. He caught a number of deep routes and looked comfortable at a position that still looms as the Cats’ Achilles heel. The Cats must have a downfield threat this fall and Ford showcased that potential today, making two important grabs and stretching the field while in the game.

The QB battle became no clearer today as both Woodson and Pulley played well and Brooks specifically said that no decision would be made until the fall. These two guys both have their backers (I am in the Woodson corner), but today saw solid progress from both young men and showcased the potential for depth at a position that has plagued the Cats since the loss of the Hefty Lefty.

And depth truly was the word today. For the first time in many years, multiple players played well at multiple positions. This is a hugely important sign for the development of the program and while no one should begin a march down Nicholasville Road just yet (or maybe they should, as it would be extremely funny), it was a day of optimism at Commonwealth Stadium.
