The Greatest Game That Never Was

by:Patrick Barker04/09/10
p1_antoine-getty SI.com is running a pretty cool series on their site which, in the coming weeks, will match up greats of respective sports that never got the opportunity to play one another, usually due to lack of time travel capabilities.  Seriously, when are we going to have time travel?  I feel like it should have been invented by now.  Anyway, SI considers the greatest college basketball game that never happened your 1996 Kentucky Wildcats vs. the undefeated 1964 UCLA Bruins.  SI does a good job of analyzing the matchup, considering styles of play, rosters, coaching and playing conditions.  To account for UK's clearly superior stockpile of athletes, the game is played under 1964 rules which had no shot clock or 3pt line.  I won't ruin the results for you here, so you can go to the site and check it out.  There's even a cool picture they've photoshopped of Derek Anderson guarding Walt Hazzard.  And for you baseball geeks, check out the first part in the series where they match up the 1975 Cincinnati Reds with the 1998 Yankees.
