Today on KSR: When can we talk about Game of Thrones?!

If you’re here, you’re most likely looking to start your week with the latest on what’s happening in the world of UK Sports, which is 100% fair and I promise we’ll get to that. It’s also Derby week, so really, there’s a ton going on that we can talk about that has nothing to do with Game of Thrones, but OH MY GOD DID YOU SEE GAME OF THRONES. I’m not going to spoil anything, promise, but if you’re a fan of the show and for some crazy reason couldn’t be in front of the TV last night, stop what you’re doing and go catch up right now. It’s way better than working and your boss can just deal with it.

Just typing that got me all riled up again, so here’s some news while I calm down.

ICYMI, Kentucky got a massive football commitment last night

Sunday evening, 2020 four-star offensive lineman John Young committed to Kentucky, picking the Cats over Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Purdue, and Louisville. Not only is Young’s pledge big because he’s good — Rivals’ No. 214 overall prospect and No. 24 offensive tackle — he’s also from Louisville, meaning he’s poised to become the program’s next home state hero. In football recruiting, we’ve learned the hard way not to trust a commitment until the ink on the letter of intent is dry, but Young’s pledge seems sincere.

That was just the icing on the cake of a huge weekend for the program. In case you missed the final rounds of the NFL Draft, here’s where Kentucky’s players ended up:

  • No. 7 (1st Round): Josh Allen, Jacksonville Jaguars
  • No. 54 (2nd Round): Lonnie Johnson, Houston Texans
  • No. 99 (3rd Round): Mike Edwards, Tampa Bay Bucaneers
  • No. 122 (4th Round): Benny Snell, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • No. 232 (7th Round): George Asafo-Adjei, New York Giants

Kentucky’s five draft picks are the most for the program since 1979, when eight Cats were chosen (James Ramsey, Jim Kovach, Kelly Kirchbaum, Rod Stewart, Bob Winkel, Robert Hawkins, Dan Fowler and David Stephens). Six more Cats signed free agent deals:

  • Chris Westry, Dallas Cowboys
  • Dorian Baker, Cleveland Browns
  • CJ Conrad, New York Giants
  • Bunchy Stallings, Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Derrick Baity, Houston Texans
  • Darius West, Kansas City Chiefs

Five-star wing Johnny Juzang starts his visit

Literally one minute after Young committed to the football team, five-star wing Johnny Juzang included the basketball Cats in his top four along with Kansas, Virginia, and Oregon. Fresh off a visit from John Calipari last week, the 6’7″ prospect out of Studio City, California announced he is reclassifying to 2019 and today, his official visit to Kentucky begins. Last night, he checked out UK’s locker room at Rupp:

Virginia is considered the other major contender for Juzang, but things are certainly looking good for the Cats to add some much-needed shooting to next year’s roster.

PJ Washington KSBar Signing Tour tickets available today

It was an emotional weekend for fictional characters

Yesterday was going to be intense enough with the Battle of Winterfell, so I decided to up the ante by seeing Avengers: Endgame in the afternoon. I realize that at the end of the day, these are just fake characters inside a magical box, but man, that was a lot.

If you’ve seen Avengers and want to geek out over some of the details, I encourage you to check out my husband’s podcast, 2 Guys 1 Girl Santa. As a casual Avengers fan, they answered a lot of questions I had, including why — just kidding. I won’t spoil it. You can listen on iTunes or Soundcloud.

As for Game of Thrones, you know Nick and TJ Walker will take care of you. They’re turning hour two of Kentucky Roll Call into Kentucky Thrones Radio, which you can listen to starting RIGHT NOW.

See you in a few weeks

I’ll be with you guys until lunchtime then I’m off for a few weeks to see what it’s like not to sit in front of a computer all day. If you need me, I’ll be in Greece, where, who knows, I may just run into Rick Pitino. Yamas!
