Travis Perry is in elite company. The sharp-shooting junior from Lyon County is now one of only two Kentucky high school basketball players to score 4,000 career points.

Perry had 32 points in a 66-61 over Bracken County Saturday night. He now has 4,022 career points, second only to the “King,” Wayland’s Kelly Coleman. As Perry climbs up the record books, stats take a backseat to wins for the Lyons.

“Business comes first. Winning comes first at all times,” said Perry on WLAP Sunday Morning Sports Talk. “The main goal is making it back to Rupp Arena.

“But it’s is a huge blessing. It’s very humbling to be in the position I’m in. I’m thankful for all the teammates I’ve had, the great coaches I’ve had and the support I’ve had throughout. It’s something where you kind of just sit back, look at and see I am one of only two to ever do that, it sinks in just a little bit how blessed I am to be in the position I am and have the platform I have.”

This year Travis Perry, a four-star recruit ranked as the No. 87 player in the 2024 recruiting class, is third in the state in scoring averaging 30.8 points per game. Now 316 points away from surpassing King Kelly Coleman, it’s a mark he could reach in 2023 if Lyon County makes a deep run in the postseason. If he continues to score 31 points per game, Perry can break the all-time scoring record in the second round of the Sweet 16.

Barriers to Breaking the Scoring Record in 2023

Travis Perry can be a part of an historic moment at Rupp Arena if he surpasses the scoring record in the Sweet 16 as a junior. That’s much easier said than done. Lyon County lost to Region 2 rival University Heights in the All ‘A’ Classic regional tournament. The two will face off again tonight at Lyon County.

“It’s a game we want to win. It’s what it comes down to. We had a bad game against them last time,” Perry said. “We want to see that we’ve grown enough and learned from mistakes we made last time, that the stuff we’ve put in will work. We’ve grown as a team, grown as individuals, just grown collectively to make it happen. Hopefully we can play our game. The last time we got a little rattled.”

Tonight’s game is important, but will not define the season for Travis Perry and the Lyons. A rematch is likely in the cards between UHA and Lyon County in the Region 2 Tournament later this month.

“We have to play our game and be us,” said Travis Perry. “This game won’t determine who’s going to Rupp Arena, but it’s one of those you would like to win to get a little pride back because that was a devastating loss for us and a huge win for them.”

Even though the record may not be broken this season, Travis Perry has one more season of high school basketball to play. Basketball fans in Western Kentucky will be treated to a circus unlike anything before in the 2023-24 season.
