Tyler Smith

by:Matt Jones03/16/06

In the breakdown of all the NCAA regions (which has been a monumental and never to be repeated task), a bit has gotten lost, especially the news on super recruit, Tyler Smith. As I said here last week, there was a lot of talk around the Smith camp that he was going to commit within the week last week to the Cats. That didnt happen, and most assume it was because of a strong effort from Memphis to try and get Smith on campus. There has also been a lot of talk recently of Pitt re-empahasizing their recruitment of Smith and trying to make it a three-way race.

Here is what I know. The Smith camp wants to make VERY SURE that the school where he commits has a coach that will be there when he arrives on campus. None of the three programs where he is looking can assure that, with Calipari a possibility at IU, Tubby pro possibilities and Jamie Dixon a name on lots of tongues across the country. Thus most believe the Smith camp will wait until after the NCAA Tourney before making a decision.

Not to be a pessimist, but every day this drags on, the potential for a UK commitment wanes. Tubby had the guy on campus and ready to commit, but for whatever reason (and opinions vary on this) it didnt happen. If it doesnt happen soon, I would venture to say that Tyler will be a Tiger next season.
