Tyrese Maxey on Anthony Edwards' "too little" taunts: "We're going to have a conversation about that"

With 13:45 to go in the second half, Georgia superstar playmaker and former five-star prospect Anthony Edwards took Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey off the dribble, made a spin move in the lane, and finished on a strong basket at the rim.

In the process, Maxey stumbled backward and fell to the floor.

After the impressive play, Edwards gestured to Maxey that he was “too little,” holding his hand down close to the floor and staring the Wildcat guard down as he backpedaled to mid-court.

After the game, Maxey, who played against Edwards at the high school level and is admittedly a close friend, said that he plans on having a “conversation” with the Georgia guard “as soon as [he] gets off the plane.”

“Yeah, we’re going to have a conversation about that,” he said jokingly of Edwards’ “too little” hand gesture. “I’m probably going to call him as soon as I get off the plane. I just saw it on ESPN too. We’re going to have to have a conversation about that.”

While Edwards won the individual battle, Maxey and the Kentucky Wildcats won the war, taking home a 78-69 victory over Georgia.

“He did [best me on that play], and that’s okay,” he said. “At the end of the day, I think we had more points than them, so that’s okay.”

Who had the better individual performance, though, is up for debate. Maxey finished with a solid 17 points on 7-15 shooting to go with seven rebounds, eight assists, four blocks, and a steal, while Edwards managed 23 points (8-17 shooting), five rebounds, and two assists.

The Georgia star led in the scoring column, while Maxey dominated every other category. And after Edwards’ gesture, he failed to convert on a basket for 11 straight minutes, scoring again with 1:25 to go on a made layup with the game out of reach.

“It was amazing, especially on the road in front of their home crowd,” Maxey said of the head-to-head battle he got to have with Edwards. “We had a lot of fun. We couldn’t really talk during the game, but after the game, we exchanged words, hugged each other, said we’d see each other here in a couple weeks. Whenever it is.”

As for his individual scouting report of Edwards, Maxey had nothing but praise for the former top-three recruit in the class of 2019.

“He’s great, he’s really tough to guard, especially when he has the green light to shoot like that,” Maxey said of Edwards. “He has to make plays for that team to win, it’s really hard to guard him. I’m really proud of him, I hope he keeps working on his game. Shout out to you, Ant.”

Back at the Jordan Brand Classic, Edwards told KSR that he had immense respect for the Kentucky guard, adding that “he’s hard to stay in front of.”

“Tyrese Maxey, he’s cold,” Edwards told KSR. “I mean to me, every dude that’s committed to Kentucky is really good. But Tyrese can really shoot, and his floater is unstoppable. He’s hard to stay in front of.”

Maxey will get his shot at Edwards (and vice versa) again on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. ET at Rupp Arena.
