UK Athletics Lends a Helping Hand

You may have read this over on the main site in a note this morning, but I think it deserves its own post. After a Board of Trustees meeting, President Eli Capilouto accepted the recommendation that UK Athletics increase its contribution to academic scholarships at the university. The organization will be increasing the funds it provides to scholarships by over 75%, raising its support from $1.7 million to $3 million. This is obviously great news for the university, which is undergoing a nightmare situation financially with the ridiculous amount of budget cuts handed down from the state government. UK has been forced to cut some positions, cut pay for others, and reduce spending across the board at a time when it needs to spend more in order to achieve its goal of becoming a top research institution. With the addition of more funding by the athletics department, UK will be able to hand out a higher quantity of upper-tier scholarships, which will at least ensure that it can attract top-level students to Lexington. Since UK Athletics is one of a small number of collegiate athletics organizations across the country that maintains a self-supported status, its contributions to the academic portion of the school is a huge bonus to the university as a whole. It's good to see that the partnership between athletics and academics is alive and well at UK. @AdamSchiltKSR
