Ulis and Jones At Kentucky? Not So Fast My Friend.
In 2010 the Wildcats landed two top point guard prospects in John Wall and Eric Bledsoe. The dynamic duo played to each other’s strengths and weaknesses to form a formidable attack for Kentucky that lead to an elite 8 finish. For now the 2014 point guard situation i cloudy. Andrew Harrisson will almost assuredly turn towards the NBA once this season ends which will open the door for the next in line to be UK’s pg. As of now the Cats are pursuing both Tyus Jones and Tyler Ulis but don’t expect the Cats to have a chance of landing both guys. Ulis’ father spoke to Steve Jones of the Courier-Journal:
“I would never say never,” James Ulis said with a laugh, “but I would think if you asked Tyler and asked Tyus, they would say they play the exact same position at the exact time in the game.”
The player long seen as UK’s top target at the position – Dallas’ Emmanuel Mudiay – committed to Southern Methodist last month.
Ulis said he believes his son could have potentially played well alongside Mudiay, a big, athletic guard who also can play off the ball, but he doubts Tyler and Jones, whom the Ulises like and deeply respect, would feel comfortable sharing a backcourt because both like to handle the ball. They are conventional, distributing point guards who can also score.
It was Ulis’ sensational 22-point, 17-assist performance against Jones in a game at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam in July that helped get Calipari, who watched about half the game, and his assistants interested.
Ulis, who also made an official visit to Michigan State this weekend, will be one three well-regarded official visitors to UK starting Sunday. Also in town are center Jahlil Okafor of Chicago, the nation’s No. 1 player, according to Rivals.com, ESPN.com and Scout.com, and four-star Mississippi shooting guard Devin Booker.
Many are predicting Jones will either be a package deal with Okafor, attend Duke, or do both. Ulis is down to UK and Michigan St with many considering the Cats the leader. With Ulis on campus this weekend do you think he will pull the trigger and join Towns as the second member of the 2014 class? Or will the Cats be looking elsewhere to land a top tier point guard?
