Union Rags' Saturday night notes

This was originally supposed to be a Saturday where we watched the last leg of I'll Have Another's triple crown run at the Belmont. Instead, he was scratched on Friday and the race was thrown wide open. That gave Union Rags, one of the Kentucky Derby favorites, a chance at redemption and he took full advantage. Jockey John Velasquez kept Union Rags on the rail for most of the race and waited for the slim opening he needed down the home stretch. He passed Paynter, who had led from the start, in the final furlong and took the Belmont by a neck to get the triple crown win he couldn't manage over the last five weeks. Anyone with even a remote interest in the triple crown wanted to see I'll Have Another make a run at history, but instead it was a day for Union Rags, and now he's capping it off by being the featured subject of the night notes. --Besides the Belmont, the other major sports news of the day came in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Boston got out to an early lead, but Miami stormed through the second half and eventually was too much for the Celtics, beating them 101-88. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh combined for 73 points, 28 of them in the final quarter, to overcome another Rajon Rondo triple-double and set up what should be a fantastic finals matchup with Oklahoma City. Durant vs. Lebron is enough to make the series worth watching, but the all around star power and up-and-down styles of play should make it one to remember. --One other note from this Saturday was the conclusion of the story of the UK-themed prosthetic leg that was found in the ocean earlier this week. The owner of the prosthetic came forward, and not only is he a UK fan, he also happens to be a former Kentucky football player. It belongs to Fred Robinson, a running back for the Cats in the 1980s. The leg was pulled off by the tide over Memorial Day weekend and luckily was found and will be reunited with its rightful owner, putting an end to a unique story that grabbed a few headlines along the way. --If you didn't catch it earlier, scroll down and read Cal's latest post on CoachCal.com. It's an interesting look at how he's choosing to run the program openly and why he feels the way he does about sharing information about the program with the masses. Essentially, I feel like he's saying "We'll show you the way we do things, and then beat you anyway." It's a unique way to manage a program that is so visible anyway, and it's just one more way to set UK apart from everyone else. I like it. --The Devils beat the Kings to move the Stanley Cup Finals to 3-2 in favor of LA as they head back to the west coast for game 6. Also, Germany beat Portugal and Denmark upset the Netherlands on day two of Euro 2012. You don't care. That's it for now. We'll be back with more tomorrow. Until then...
