There are many schools out there that are noted for various themes.  North Carolina has developed a tradition of creating excellent pro basketball players.  Kansas is often called the birthplace of college coaches.  For a time, Florida was QB University.  But not every school can have such positive attributes.  Enter Virginia Tech.  For those of you who missed the Duke-Va Tech game last night (and why would you?), another Virginia Tech athlete showed his thuggish side when he kicked Lee Melchionni in the face after a tie up under the basket.

Now as those of you who have spent any time following college basketball certainly agree, there are often times when you watch Duke that you truly want to bash all of their faces in.  Much has been written here and elsewhere about the annoying streams of players that have come through Durham over the years.  However with the exception of Christian Laettner, none of these players deserves to have his face bashed in during a scrum on the court.  When combined with the elegant Marcus Vick's stomp of Louisville's Elvis Dumervill (Duke and Louisville...is UK somehow involved?), Virginia Tech is slowly becoming "Bad Attitude University."  

Last night was a bit better than the Vick situation as the player came up and apologized to Coach K (who immediately sold him an American Express card).  As a "leader of men", Coach K is able to forgive people very quickly and thus all was happy.  But something has to be done in Blacksburg.  For many years, the best stories coming out of that college town involved Coach Beamer's goiter and Michael Vick's aliases and lawsuits.  Such uplifting stories should not be sullied by thuggishness....but that is threatening to happen.
