Liam Coen is back in Kentucky blue and it’s like he never left. This week Kentucky opened spring practice and shared a little bit of what it’s like to work with the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator.

The Ky Wildcats TV crew mic’d up Liam Coen for what appears to be spring practice No. 2. In the early stages of his return to Lexington, this spring session is all about establishing standards. In this case, Devin Leary and the Kentucky quarterbacks should be completing 80% of their passes in 7-on-7. After all, there is no pass rush in their face. They should be more efficient.

Unfortunately, Kentucky will not host a spring game. Kroger Field does not currently have a field as they are in the process of replacing the playing surface. Instead, we’ll get an open practice and various highlights from spring practice. The first big one is a connection between Leary and Barion Brown, narrated by Liam Coen.

What it’s like to Play for Liam Coen

Barion Brown was recruited by Liam Coen, but never got the chance to play for him at Kentucky. The talented wide receiver appreciates the offensive coordinator’s approach.

“You can just tell stuff is serious,” Brown said after Tuesday’s practice. “Everybody knows the goal that we want to get to. Everybody knows what we have to do to get to that goal. We’re working hard constantly. Coach (Coen) has been coaching us up, great coach. I’m just looking forward to the season.”

Dane Key was excited when he learned Liam Coen was returning to UK. “I was really happy when Liam came back because I knew what he did the year before and I know what he can do with a lot more special receivers, like you’ve just seen with Barion. I know we’re going to do a lot of special things this year.”

Unlike the young receivers, running back JuTahn McClain was here for Coen’s first stint at Kentucky. Relearning the playbook sounds a lot like riding a bike for the first time in a long time.

“A lot of people are familiar with our schemes and stuff. We kind of got a jump-start on spring ball with all of that,” said McClain. “Everybody’s just hungry, ready to get after it.”
