From Jon Scott's site. It's the best.
You guys hear about how we have to play Connecticut tomorrow?! Wow what a great storyline! They beat us twice last year and now we finally get to have us some vindication! Oh? They lost? By 13? To Iowa State?! I guess that's good though because everyone was really worried about having to play them. They have some future NBA players!
Oh? They underperformed all year long and couldn't pull together to bail water out of a sinking boat? I guess I'm bummed we're not playing them then. Can we at least make a storyline with Iowa State? Ok good.
I don't think there was any doubt about why the selection committee put who they did in our region.
UK is the most hotly discussed team in college basketball and they have been for the past three seasons. The fact that we could have gone to the Final Four through a team from Kentucky / a team coached by an Unforgettable to the team that knocked us out last year to the only team that beat us in the regular season to the team that did that thing 20 years ago that we're reminded about on that phenomenally crappy UPS commercial shouldn't come as much of a shock. However, things don't always work out as planned and I can't say that I'm disappointed to be playing Iowa State. If you guys want a storyline, I think I can concoct one though.
Twenty years ago, before the Unforgettables met Duke in the Elite Eight, they played Iowa State in the second round of the tournament. If you'll notice the above picture, you'll see Jamal Mashburn punking a bunch of white guys in Iowa State jerseys. Somehow those white guys scored 98 points, but it wasn't enough to top the Cats' 106.
Pelphrey, Woods, Feldhaus, Farmer and Mashburn all scored in double figures and the team would advance to beat John Calipari's Massachusetts team before auditioning for that crappy UPS commercial.
So just like the '92 team, we could end up playing Iowa State, then a team we played in the regular season before meeting Duke in the Elite Eight and getting revenge for 20 years ago on our way to the Final Four.
It's like the plot of Groundhog Day. We just get to keep doing it over again with a few tiny changes until we get it right. Boom. There's your storyline.
In all seriousness though, if we see Iowa State then VCU and Colorado, I'll be as happy as can be.
At this point we just need to keep the intensity up and look to utterly crush any team stupid enough to line up across from us. I don't care if it's Western Kentucky or North Carolina. The only storyline I want to be talking about at the end of this year is how great it is to hang number eight.
