After recording a sack early in the game on Teddy Bridgewater, DE Za’Darius Smith has passed Louisiana Tech DT IK Enemkpali as the nation’s leader in QB sacks with 5 through the first 3 games. The JUCO transfer Smith also became the first UK player since Jeremy Jarmon in 2007 to record at least 1 sack in 3 consecutive games.

Za’Darius is on pace to record 20 sacks on the season, which would demolish the current single season Kentucky record of 12 set by Dennis Johnson in 2001. He’s also on pace to break the OFFICIAL SEC record of 15 sacks held by Willie Evans of Mississippi State, and I capitalize the word official because former Alabama star Derrick Thomas is considered the unofficial NCAA single season leader with an incredible 27 sacks in 1988, after recording another 18 in 1987. However, sacks didn’t become an official NCAA statistic until 2000 so Thomas’ record is unofficial. Terrell Suggs from Arizona State is considered the modern-day NCAA leader with 24 sacks in 2002, and no player has recorded 20 sacks in a season since Elvis Dumervil in 2005.

Keep being scary Big Z.
