LSU is looking to win a second CWS Championship in the past three seasons as Game 1 begins in Omaha vs. a red-hot Coastal Carolina team.

Here’s a look at what’s ahead as both programs race to grab a pair of wins to secure a second National Championship for their respective program over the past decade.

LSU is set to start the program’s Friday ace Kade Anderson, who had a strong showing his last time out as the Tigers knocked off Arkansas to kickstart a 3-0 start in Omaha.

Kade Anderson avoids the early threat from Coastal

LSU starter Kade Anderson walked a batter, allowed an extra base on a passed ball, then walked another batter to put runners on first and second with two outs. On his 25th pitch of the inning, Anderson delivered in crunch time with three straight strikes to get out of the top of the first inning with no runs and no hits allowed with two runners left on base.

The Tigers struck first in Game 1 of the 2025 CWS Finals. Derek Curiel’s lead-off walk led to him getting on second base with Steven Milam at the plate. Milam delivered with a single up the middle, and Curiel’s score from second put LSU up 1-0. Coastal quickly got out of the inning with strikeouts of both Jake Brown and Jared Jones.

Anderson allowed a walk, but it came after two quick outs with a ground out and pop fly before Anderson struck out the final batter in the frame for the second time in two innings. In the bottom of the inning, Coastal Carolina pitcher Cameron Flukey opened the inning with a ground out before a striking out another LSU batter who got caught looking. Daniel Dickinson delivered a single to give LSU the team’s second hit off Flukey before the inning ended with Michael Braswell’s deep fly ball to right field that was blown down by the wind and caught to keep the score at 1-0.

Both teams get runners on in the 3rd, but LSU’s lead stays 1-0

Once again, Anderson got out of the inning unscathed after allowing a walk and hitting a batter to put runners on first and second. From there, Anderson recorded his third strikeout in three innings before Coastal was tagged out by LSU’s Michael Braswell on an attempt to steal third base – which ended the inning. When Coastal Carolina pitcher Cameron Flukey got Derek Curiel to ground out and Ethan Frey to fly out to the catcher, the Tigers put some pressure on when Milam nearly put a ball over the left field wall, ultimately settling for a double after the ball bounced off the top of the wall and back into right field. Milam got to third base on a wild pitch, but Flukey got out of the inning by catching Jake Brown looking for the strikeout.

Anderson started the fourth inning by allowing a lead-off double, the second hit LSU’s starter had allowed. Then the potential MLB No. 1 pick buckled in to strike out the next three batters in a row to end the inning without any runs for Coastal’s offense.

Anderson struck out his fourth batter in a row start the top of the fifth inning before hitting his second batter of the game. From there, a pair of fly balls to LSU centerfielder Chris Stanfield ended the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Braswell and Curiel struck out before Ethan Frey popped out on just two pitches to end the inning.

The pitching duel continued into the sixth inning as Anderson needed just seven pitches to get through three batters in the sixth inning, adding another strikeout to move to 8 strikeouts on the game. The Tigers got Milam to third base in the in the bottom of the sixth inning, but once again Coastal was able to escape any additional runs by the Tigers by getting the ground out to end the threat and keep the score at 1-0.

Anderson hits 100 pitches through 7 innings in Game 1

Coastal Carolina got a runner in scoring position again in the top of the seventh inning, but Anderson got out of the inning again – and held Coastal’s hitters to 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The final out came on an impressive play by LSU second baseman Daniel Dickinson on a tough hop that was fielded cleanly for the throw to first base.

Daniel Dickinson was hit by a pitch on a full count to lead off the inning against Coastal reliever Dominick Carbone, but the challenge paid off as the umpire reversed the call and ruled Dickinson out for leaning into the pitch. Carbone went on to get the next three batters out on nine pitches. LSU took a 1-0 lead into the 8th inning.

Anderson hits 115 pitches as LSU holds Coastal to no runs in 8 innings

Through the first eight innings, Coastal Carolina didn’t score a run and LSU didn’t turn away from starter Kade Anderson. After a fly out and ground out to start the eighth inning, Anderson allowed a walk while the Tigers had multiple relievers warming up in the bullpen. But on pitch No. 115, Anderson ended the inning with his ninth strikeout across eight innings, allowing just three hits on the night.

Milam grounded out to start the inning for his first at bat without reaching base in Game 1 of the CWS, and while Jake Brown got his first hit of the day with a single to right field, the struggles in the CWS Finals opener continued for Jared Jones as he hit into a routine double-play ball to end the inning and keep the score at LSU 1, Coastal Carolina 0 with one inning to play.

LSU kept Anderson in the game in the ninth inning, and he struck out a batter to lead things off before getting the game’s final two outs on a ground out and fly ball to right field. With the win, LSU moves to 4-0 in Omaha and one game away from winning the 2025 College World Series Championship. Anderson threw 130 pitches and allowed no runs on just three hits with 10 strikeouts.
