LSU defensive back Jordan Toles entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Thursday, a source told On3Sports. The former 4-star prospect played in six of the first seven games of the 2021 season, recording 12 tackles.

Recruited out of Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy, Toles played in 15 career games for LSU. He finished with 16 total tackles and a half tackle for loss.

A two-sport player, Jordan Toles picked the Tigers over Michigan, Maryland, Penn State and others. According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Toles was the No. 63 overall prospect, No. 3 safety nationally and No. 5 prospect in Maryland.

In spring, Brian Kelly praised Toles for his versatility in the safety group. He also lined up at cornerback at some points during the spring.

“I like the versatility of the safety group,” Kelly said. “There’s a little bit more versatility that maybe I didn’t see early on. You see [Greg] Brooks and [Joe] Foucha and Sage [Ryan] and [Jordan] Toles and [Derrick] Davis is flipping around. … There’s a little bit more depth and flexibility at that position than maybe I first thought.

“That, to me, I’m more pleased with that result than maybe I was coming in.”

Jordan Toles latest to explore NCAA Transfer Portal

The NCAA transfer portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be  contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
