LSU's softball season ends with regional losses to Southeastern LA

LSU’s softball season ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday as in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana walked off the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Lions loaded the bases with runners reaching a single, an error and a walk and scored on a fielder’s choice to second to upset their hosts for the second time in as many days, 8-7, and eliminate LSU from the Baton Rouge Regional.
The Tigers struck first with a run in the first inning, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the frame and played from behind the rest of the evening — drawing even in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but never claiming control of another lead.
Southeastern Louisiana had started LSU’s weekend on a bad note Friday with four straight shutout innings beginning in the fourth and a game-winning run in the top of the seventh.
The Tigers bounced back Saturday afternoon to blank Connecticut, 3-0, in an elimination game, but struggled again to keep the Lions in check in their rematch.
Coach Beth Torina’s squad finishes the season with a 42-16 record, the third straight year with at least 40 wins and the 10th in her 14-year tenure.

LSU wrapped the regular season with rankings of No. 9 in the ESPN/USA Softball poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches and D1 Softball polls and earned the No. 10 overall national seed in the NCAA tournament.
But the Tigers fell in the regionals for the third time in four years, including home regionals for the second time in the past three years — following a 2023 elimination by Louisiana (Lafayette).
LSU is now 88-60 all-time in the NCAA tournament, including 66-33 in the regional round.
Southeastern Louisiana, the No. 4 seed in the regional, survived to face No. 2 Nebraska at 2 p.m. Sunday.
A Lions win would force a final, winner-take-all game with the Cornhuskers at 4:30 p.m.
Either Southeastern Louisiana or Nebraska will advance from the Baton Rouge Regional to a super regional matchup next week against the winner of the Knoxville Regional in which host Tennessee, the No. 7 national seed, and Ohio State will face Sunday.
