News: Trey Holly no longer with LSU, now enrolled at Southern

Former LSU running back Trey Holly has found a new school, spotted at Southern on Tuesday, in pads for the team’s first fall practice. Brendon Fairbarin of Louisiana First News was first to report, even posting pictures of Holly. He has enrolled at Souther and will be a walk-on for the football team, a spokesperson told The Advocate

Holly spent the last two seasons in Baton Rouge but only played in 2023. He received 11 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown. That came against Army in a nonconference game with the game well in hand. A 67-yard score made up for most of Holly’s production.

LSU has not played Holly since due to a legal issue involving an attempted second-degree murder charge. However, it’s since been dropped. An illegal use of a weapon and aggravated criminal damage to property charge is still there on Holly’s name but the running back is still contesting.

“Obviously, we’ve followed Trey’s situation legally and there’s not much that we can do,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said on the situation in Sept. 2024. “We hope for resolution in the case, but this is out of our hands right now.”

Fairbairn later posted on X that Southern head coach Terrence Graves confirmed Holly is eligible to play.

“Holly remained indefinitely suspended at LSU as he awaited trial, which was supposed to start July 7 but had to be postponed because the A/C went out at the courthouse in Union Parish,” Te Advocate’s Wilson Alexander said about the legal situation.

Southern will begin its season on Aug. 23 with a 6 p.m. CT kickoff against NC Central. Just one game against an FBS program falls on the schedule, heading out West to face off against Fresno State on Sept. 13. Every other game will come against an FCS program.

Holly played high school football at Farmerville (LA) Union Parish, where he was a four-star prospect and one of the best running backs in Louisiana history, statistically. He was the No. 262 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
