LSU’s ace pitcher Kade Anderson has solidified himself as one of the most reliable pitchers in the country and now is ready to lead his team on the mound in the postseason. The Tigers begin their run in the SEC tournament on Thursday as the No. 3 seed and from there will await their draw in the NCAA Tournament the following weekend.

Anderson spoke with the media on Tuesday about the team, what’s ahead, and his development throughout the season. Here’s everything he said.

On LSU’s team success this season…

“I mean, going into it, it’s hard to kind of think about, but when you go week to week and just do our deal, I think you’ve got to give a lot of credit to coach Yeskie for keeping us afloat. We’ve had some tough weekends, and some weekends, like we did against Oklahoma, where everything just went our way. So, I think it just shows the depth of our pitching staff. We’re always in the fight.”

Physical development and growth this season…

“I think we’ve talked about this a lot, but the slider has really developed my game. Without that pitch, I don’t think I’d be where I am right now. Big credit to Jamie and Yeskie for really getting after it this fall, and really Chris as well, like Coach Johnson mentioned earlier. He’s been a big factor for our team. You look at the SEC, these teams are so physical, so you kind of have to match that.”

On what he’s learned from Anthony Eyanson this season at LSU…

“That just shows you the character he has. We’ve learned a lot from each other, and I think that’s been our biggest help, just pushing each other. No one’s ever satisfied. If he has 15 strikeouts one game, that gets me going, and vice versa. We’re always driving each other and setting the tone for how it’s supposed to be done. That’s what being a leader on the staff is all about.

The funny thing is, you’d never know if he had a great weekend or not. That reminds me of guys like Holman and Jump, same thing. They’re always the same off the field. That consistency is a big reason he’s been so successful.”

On being the day one starter at LSU and routine heading into the postseason

Yeah, it’s a schedule I like to stay on. My body’s used to it now. I throw 100 pitches every week and really don’t fatigue much. So staying on schedule has been big, and the other guys, like Shores, being able to handle innings has helped us out. That’s going to show later in postseason games.”

How worried were you about your wrist?

“Not much. I knew it was a cramp. It just locked up on me. That’s all it was. No, but I’ve had other little deals. I mean, throwing 100 pitches a week, stuff like that’s bound to happen. I feel great.”

On being named to the All-SEC team…

“It’s a big deal in my opinion. It’s something I wanted to accomplish this year. It’s cool to have that and keep moving toward the bigger goal—winning a national championship.”

On LSU getting a top-eight seed…

“Yeah, if we’re the number one team, I think it’d be hard not to get a top-eight seed. Obviously, we want to play here, our fans help a lot—and any advantage we can get is huge. But no matter where or when we play, we’ll be ready.”
