Miami has flipped one of its top priorities of the fall.

Miami formally landed Orlando (Fla.) Lake Nona four-star 2026 EDGE DeAnthony Lafayette following a months-long effort to pull the No. 367 overall prospect and No. 41 receiver away from LSU, who he was previously committed to before decommitting Sunday. Lafayette committed to LSU July 10 after taking official visits to Miami, LSU, Oklahoma and Boston College, but the Hurricanes became particularly involved with the 6-foot-0.5, 230-pound prospect over the past several months.

Vanderbilt and LSU were also in the mix.

We entered predictions for the Hurricanes to land Lafayette when buzz began picking up favoring Miami around Halloween after sources indicated a decision could be near. Lafayette himself hinted at a possible announcement in the near future in an interview with CaneSport several days later and said it was possible he could end up visiting Miami Saturday for the Canes’ game against Syracuse before confirming his plans Friday.

Lafayette marks Miami’s 26th commit in the Canes’ 11th-ranked 2026 class and second EDGE commit along with four-star pledge Asharri Charles, although Lafayette is more of a JACK outside linebacker/stand-up EDGE while Charles projects as more of a traditional defensive end.

Lafayette climbed on Miami’s radar this spring and summer but skyrocketed this fall amid a tremendous senior season. The Hurricanes remained involved earlier in the year while Lafayette was still firmly committed to the Tigers, although Miami progressed through the month of October. Miami defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman stopped by his school during the Canes’ most recent bye week and remained personally involved his recruitment along with defensive line coach Jason Taylor, head coach Mario Cristobal and general manager Dennis Smith.

He’s Miami’s second commit in two days after landing four-star safety James Dunnigan Sunday evening and fourth total commit of the fall after landing three-star defensive tackle Frederic Sainteus in September and four-star receiver Milan Parris in late October.

CaneSport’s Take

Miami may not yet have a recruiting ranking inside the top 10, but this has still been a strong class for the Hurricanes so far considering how many priorities the staff has zeroed in on and gone on to land — including Lafayette. But we still anticipate the Canes could land a few more blue-chip prospects before signing day like Blake Stewart or Logan Nagle or Isaac Chukwurah or Gavin Mueller.
