Miami picked up its first safety commit of the year Friday afternoon when the Hurricanes landed four-star top-300 safety Cortez Redding over Indiana, N.C. State and Ole Miss. The 6-foot, 190-pound safety, who projects well as a nickel at Miami, is the No. 290 overall prospect and No. 24 safety in the cycle and a consensus four-star recruit.

Redding becomes the 22nd player to commit to Miami in the 2026 class and the third player to commit to the Canes this month along with four-star receiver Somourian Wingo, who committed last week and four-star cornerback Brody Jennings, who flipped from Michigan July 5. He’s also the fifth four-star defensive back to commit to Miami this year.

The Jonesboro (Ga.) native is high school teammates and close friends with four-star cornerback commit Jontavius Wyman, who had been working to flip him to the Canes since he committed in April. Miami secondary coach Will Harris, defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge and defensive analyst and nickel backs coach Terry Jefferson all played roles in landing his recruitment.

Miami climbed significantly for Redding after his unofficial visit to Coral Gables with Wyman in late March and appeared close to landing him in April, although he ultimately chose to make his decision this summer instead. Redding took official visits to each of his finalists.

Buzz grew around Miami and Indiana earlier this month, although N.C. State also pushed aggressively. But the Hurricanes emerged as the odds-on favorite to land his commitment early this week.

Redding’s commitment gives the Hurricanes a badly-needed win at the safety position after Miami whiffed on four-star safeties Devin Jackson, Tyriq Green and Blake Stewart, who were long-time priorities for the Canes in this year’s cycle. The Canes are expected to stay aggressive in their pursuit of Jackson and Green this fall, although Stewart will likely be difficult to flip from Clemson considering the Tigers require recruits to fully shut down after committing to a school.

The Hurricanes would like to take two safeties this cycle, although we think it’s possible Miami takes three if the right players show interest.

CaneSport’s Take

Boy, did Miami need this win to calm fan anxiety around the Hurricanes’ safety recruiting. Redding was the only uncommitted safety left the Canes were showing interest in, which means the rest of Miami’s safety class will most likely come from flip targets.
