Michigan State jumpstarted its assembly of the 2024 recruiting class when four-star, Top 50 shooting guard Kur Teng, of Bradford Christian Academy in Manchester, NH, committed to the Spartans during a national announcement shortly after noon on Monday.

Teng, 6-4, 185, is the Spartans’ first commitment for the 2024 recruiting class.

Teng committed to the Spartans over Providence and Rutgers. He is ranked the No. 40 player in the nation and the No. 11 shooting guard by On3 and is No. 43 in the On3 Industry Rankings.

The Spartans made Teng a priority last summer and through the fall. On Sept. 29, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo took a trip to the Northeast to see Teng as part of a 17-hour recruiting spree which saw Izzo visit and scout several recruits in a handful of states.

Teng, a native of Lawrence, Mass., took an official visit to Michigan State during the weekend of Oct. 16.

“They’re one big family,” Teng said of the Spartans in December. “They’re all together 24-7, eating together at the coach’s house, going out together. In the dorms, they’re all together; they’re, for real, just one big family. I love watching them play. They like to run stuff for their shooters, coming off pin-downs. I like to play off screens, let the shot go, curl into the mid-range, or finish at the rim, depending on the read. They play so hard, too; I like that.”

Teng averaged 14.3 points while shooting 37.5% from 3 in the summer before his junior season playing up on the Adidas 3SSB 17U Circuit with the Mass Rivals program.

JAMIE SHAW’S BREAKDOWN

Kur Teng has a basketball frame, with broad shoulders and long arms. He has a smooth feel on the floor, with a great pace. A smooth catch and shoot player with consistent picture-esque form. While Teng is a slightly above-average athlete, he can attack closeouts and get to the basket or pull-up for a jump shot. Comes from basketball genes as he has multiple siblings currently playing college basketball. Coaches and those around him rave about the work ethic and approach.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR MICHIGAN STATE

With Teng committed, Michigan State is off to a strong start in following the completion of the 2023 recruiting class, which ranked No. 5 nationally in the On3 recruiting rankings.

The Spartans will continue to pursue Jace Richardson, Jesse McCulloch, Jonathan Powell, Flory Bidunga, Bryson Tucker and Tyler McKinley. There isn’t room for all of them, of course, but Michigan State has good momentum in trying to stack strong recruiting classes during an era of challenging roster management.
