France (including Normandy), Rome, South Africa … Jim Harbaugh has provided educational trips for several of his Michigan teams since coming back to U-M as head coach. This year’s will have a bit different feel — and be much closer to home.

And by closer, we mean right in their backyard. Harbaugh and his staff will restart their series of educational and experiential learning opportunities for its student-athletes with a trip around the state of Michigan this summer. This year’s travels are tentatively scheduled for July 22-29.

Since Harbaugh took over in 2015, the football program has traveled overseas for educational opportunities on three occasions. The Wolverines spent a week in Rome, Italy in 2017, visited Paris, France and Normandy in 2018, and traveled to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2019. The COVID-19 outbreak prevented trips in both 2020 and 2021, but they’ll be back on the road this summer.

Per a release, this appears to be an ongoing mission for Harbaugh as long as he’s at Michigan.

“Harbaugh believes that not all learning is done in a classroom and that these trips serve not only to educate the players about the customs and lifestyles of other cultures and areas, but also provide the opportunity to give back to those local areas,” the release stated. “Michigan Football wants to be ambassadors to communities across Michigan and around the world.”

A graphic released seemed to indicate they’d travel to Detroit, Mackinac, Traverse City and somewhere near Ludington on Lake Michigan on the west side of the state.

The university plans to release more details as the trip dates approach.

Michigan started spring practice Feb. 21, taking a week off for spring break before picking back up. The Wolverines will play a spring game April 2.
