Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 38 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
With 38 days until kickoff, let’s take a look at the all-time leader in 150-plus yard passing games — Chad Henne, who had 38 from 2004-07. John Navarre holds the school record for most in a season with 12 (2003), while Henne’s 2005 campaign (11) is tied for second and his 2004 season (10) is tied for sixth. Also tied for sixth — Michigan senior quarterback Cade McNamara.
McNamara had 10 last season, with nine coming in conference play, including a streak of six-straight. If he earns the Michigan starting job this fall — and with the way college football has gone and the amount of talent on the Wolverines ‘offense — he could grab that single-season record of 12. On top of that, depending on what the U-M postseason looks like, he could surpass that number.
The career total of 38 150-plus yard passing game reveals a lot about the opportunity (that is always earned) and longevity a Michigan quarterback has. McNamara had one game with 150-plus yards in 2020, bringing his total up to 11. In all likelihood, he’ll surge into the top 10 of the record books in that category this fall. Right now, No. 10 is Steve Smith at 17, No. 9 is Tom Brady at 18 … and he could tie for top three should he get up to 23 for his career.
It’s also entirely possible that sophomore J.J. McCarthy takes over the job at some point this season and keeps it for the rest of his career. Even then, it would be tough to beat Henne for the No. 1 spot on this list, but he’d make a quick climb up the rankings, too.
