Year two of the Jeff Lebby era has arrived and the Mississippi State coach is back to work.

After a disappointing first season, the coach and his staff are doing what they can to get things back on track in Starkville. The players on the field will be the difference for State this season if they are to make a return and we’re going to discuss every single one of them over the course of the next few months.

As we do every year, we’re counting down 100 days until State’s first game at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on August 30. Over this period of time, we’ll breakdown every scholarship player on the roster, look back at great moments in MSU history and even talk about legends that have come before the current Bulldogs.

Today, we look at a transfer defensive back that needs to be good for the Bulldogs to improve.

15 Days: No. 15, Sr. Cornerback Jayven Williams

Just before the transfer portal got rolling and the Bulldogs went to work to fix the roster, Williams was the first domino to fall.

It was known that the Bulldogs would have to have cornerback help after the loss of Brice Pollock and the need for more depth and playmaking ability was high. Corey Bell’s evaluations centered around getting a little more physically imposing figures back there and Williams fits the mold at 6’2, 185.

The Kennesaw State transfer is staying relatively close to home in the south as he hails from Mobile, Ala. He played his high school ball at Baker High School  where he played wide receiver and defensive back on his way to All-State honors in Class 7A. He earned WR MVP for the state as he hauled in 34 catches, 728 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior and he added an interception on the defensive side of the ball.

His athleticism and size would come in handy when he went off to college at Kennesaw. As a freshman, Williams would get most of his playing time on special teams and even earned opportunities as a kick returner. As a sophomore, Williams redshirted after playing in four games with three starts and going down with an injury. He was poised for a great season as he picked up 23 tackles and had 2.5 TFL and three pass breakups with a 0.5 sack.

Williams worked back on the field last year but couldn’t consistently crack the starting lineup with just one start in 11 ball games. Williams had 29 tackles but he had 1.5 sacks and an interception that he would run back for a touchdown.

The talented DB hit the portal immediately and was able to transfer to State before the rest of the class got on board due to a coaching change. He’s been working to play a major factor for the Bulldog secondary and State needs him to show up and show out this season to make the room a deeper and more productive unit this season.
