Bulldog receiver Anthony Evans enjoying quick start in new program

When Anthony Evans initially entered the transfer portal, the former Georgia receiver was simply looking for a program where he could make a direct impact. Two games into his Mississippi State career, Evans has done just that.
Evans is currently tied for team honors with 13 catches and has collected 144 receiving yards and one touchdown. Those numbers have already surpassed the totals Evans, a junior, had at Georgia.
Earlier this week Evans met with the media to discuss his start and the team’s success among other topics:
Q: How big was it to have the production you guys had against Arizona State and do it in that atmosphere?
Evans: It was crazy. The environment itself was outstanding. The fans came and did their job and we went out there and did our job. We did what we came here to do, which is win.
Q: You and Brenen Thompson have both stretched the field this year. But what about the plays y’all have made in the middle of the field?
Evans: We came here as a duo. We came here to do what we do, like I said. The coaching staff has put us in the right spots to do what we came here to do. It is a blessing to go out there and both go over 100 yards in the same game.
Q: How do you feel about your journey so far through the transfers you’ve experienced?
Evans: I knew I made the right choice as soon as I came here. Coming here with Coach (Jeff) Lebby, he is a guru on offense. Came here to go over 1,000 yards. That is what the goal is and I believe we are going to get there. Great start, too.

Q: In the preseason a lot was talked about your speed and Brenen’s speed and that it would mostly be used on vertical routes. But seems like you have expanded your route tree this year?
Evans: I love that. I actually think other teams are scared of our speed so that gives us so much space underneath. All we need is the ball in our hands and then we go make plays after that and make a couple of people miss. A ten-yard catch can turn into an 85-yard touchdown. So that is what we love to do here.
Q: You played in a lot of big games at Georgia. How does Saturday’s win set up the next game?
Evans: Just doing what the plan is. The coaching staff is going to put in a good plan for us. So just watch film and treat every game like it’s our last. Go out there and play hard and still do what the goal is, which is to win.
Q: Where does that trust in Jeff Lebby and Blake Shapen come from?
Evans: I’ve been knowing Coach Lebby for a real long time. Me and him have had that connection since high school, really. Then me and Blake, as soon as I came here they all brought me in as a family. Brenen brought me in as a family. He was actually my host on my official visit. We all had that connection and it’s a blessing. We’re all doing what we came here to do right now.
Q: What was it like to play in that environment in your first home game here?
Evans: It was crazy. Like he said, I’ve played in some big-time games. But to be honest, that stadium was probably the greatest stadium I’ve ever been in. The fans were on point. I couldn’t even hear myself thinking and I’m at home. It was just great and I hope to have that experience a lot more with the games in the future that we have at home. And it’s just Hail State.
