Transfer receiver Anthony Evans expecting big things from State's offensive attack

Mississippi State has to replace a lot of production in the receivers’ room from a year ago. This past offseason the Bulldogs hit the transfer portal to try to fill that void and there’s several possible candidates to do just that.

Among those is former Georgia transfer Anthony Evans, who is expected to start in the slot position and also play a role in the return game. Following Tuesday’s practice, Evans met with the media to discuss preseason camp and the upcoming season:

Q: How are things going so far and how are you acclimating?
Evans: It’s a blessing to be in the position I’m in. Camp has been good to all of us. Everybody is healthy, just getting ready to get to this season. So it’s been good.

Q: Outside of your role on offense, how are things on special teams?
Evans: Special teams is the turning point in every game. I feel like we take that very seriously because we know how that changes the momentum of every game, really. Special teams is the main key.

Q: Where do they have you working on special teams?
Evans: Kickoff return and punt return.

Q: What did you see out of the offensive group in the last scrimmage?
Evans: I saw execution. Everybody making plays when their number was called. That’s the big thing when we play a week from now. So that’s huge.

Q: Jeff Lebby also talked about playing clean football. How’s that been from your perspective?
Evans: Obviously, we got a little cleaning up to do. A lot of the younger guys are getting a feel for college football. The speed of the game has changed from high school. Once we figure that out, we’ll be elite on offense.

Q: After the scrimmage Lebby said he expects great years from you and Brenen Thompson. How does that sit with you hearing that?
Evans: No pressure. Just go out there and do my job, do what I came here to do. Everybody do what they came here to do, trying to make it to the next level. It will take care of itself, God’s plan.

Q: From when you first arrived to today, what changes have you seen from Blake Shapen?
Evans: We’ve been very consistent with each other the entire time. He’s one of my great friends on this team. We do a lot of stuff together, just creating that bond and that relationship with me and him. It’s gonna go a long way throughout the season.

Q; A lot of newcomers on this team. Does that help knowing a lot of other guys are going through this together?
Evans: Yes sir, for sure. Everybody is getting to know each other. So it’s not like one guy is the odd guy out. Everybody is trying to get to know each other. That helps create camaraderie as a team. That’s good.

Q: What’s the transition like going from camp mode to preparing for an opponent?
Evans: Staying healthy, knowing your personnel, getting to know the other team just as well as you know your own team. Getting within the playbook and the game plan and studying the guys on the opposite side of you.

Q: Are y’all working against the scout team now?
Evans: Yes sir, we are

Q: So what has been your reaction seeing the full unit against the scout team?
Evans: We are just going to have to play fast. Once you play fast, it is nobody that can really stop us.
